TOP STORIES

Atlanta booked their first return to the playoffs since 1971 and Manhattan and San Francisco edged closer to their second playoff appearances in their respective histories.

Lynn McGlothen threw 26 consecutive shutout innings (and counting) and Fergie Jenkins hit a torrid patch as the Spiders pulled ahead of Cleveland for third place.

Atlanta's Dave Parker closed in on the batting title, which would be a first for a rookie batter in UL history.

Denver has essentially locked up last place, but slugger Tom Grieve hit his second homer hat trick of the season and leads the league in home runs and RBIs.

Cleveland's playoff hopes hit a snag with a three-game sweep and a broken kneecap in Boston.  CF Elliott Maddux' season is done, but the Barons will get Rick Reuschel back just in time for the playoffs, provided they can hold off Chicago for fourth place.

Sox Surge Ahead, Spiders Climb
MANHATTAN (Sep. 16) – After weeks of a deadlock at the top of the East Division, the Manhattan Gray Sox seized control with a seven-game winning streak, pulling three games ahead of the Cleveland Barons with six games to play.  The Sox won two of three against the Barons on Sep. 2-4.  Don Sutton pitched a six-hit shutout and Steve Garvey and Bruce Bochte homered in a 7-1 win and rookie Craig Swan anchored a six-hitter for his second win.  The Sox then won seven in a row, sweeping Montréal and Detroit.  Steve Garvey, Lou Brock, and Gorman Thomas each drove in 10 or more runs in the last 13 games.  The Sox finish the season with a home series against Washington and a road trip to Brooklyn.  Manhattan has just one playoff appearance in its 12-year history, the 1968 World Series-winning team, and has not had a winning season since GM Eric Holthaus took over in 1971.

McGlothen, Jenkins Unhittable, S.F. Leapfrogs Barons
SAN FRANCISCO (Sep. 16) – Lynn McGlothen tossed 26 consecutive shutout innings and Fergie Jenkins was 3-0 with a 0.72 ERA as the Spiders closed in on their first playoff appearance since 1959.  McGlothen (10-14, 4.07) allowed two runs in the third inning of a 2-1 loss in Washington Aug. 28, then rattled off three straight starts without an earned run, including a pair of 1-0 wins over Atlanta and Chicago.

The Spiders (85-65) are two games ahead of fourth place Cleveland heading into the final week and are two wins away from the franchise record.  A 1955 expansion team, San Francisco has only have three winning season in 19 years and has not played postseason baseball since their epic seven-game World Series victory over the Brooklyn Superbas in 1959.  With two of the league's hottest pitchers at the top of their rotation, the Spiders seem well-suited for a short series.

Contender Notes

Atlanta
Dave
Parker will miss the final week of the season with a strained oblique, but probably has done enough to seal the batting title.  The Cobra is hitting .351, 17 points ahead of Orlando Cepeda, and would become the first rookie to win the batting title -- Harvey Kuenn (1953) and Carl Taylor (1970) both won it in the second year.

Manhattan
The Gray Sox took two of three from Cleveland then won seven straight to surge ahead in the East Division.  Garvey, Robinson, Melton, and Grabarkewitz are all hitting over .350 in September, and Don Sutton is 2-0, 1.67 in his last three starts.

San Francisco
Fergie Jenkins is 7-1 in his last nine starts and was 3-0 with a 0.72 ERA, as the Spiders notched series wins over Atlanta and Chicago and climbed to third place, overtaking Cleveland.

Cleveland
The Barons were swept in Boston, and lost Elliott Maddux to a broken kneecap.  They rallied to five straight wins at Denver and Brooklyn, but their grip on the last playoff is a tenuous one game over their nemesis Chicago.  Jorge Orta hit .435 (20-53) with 11 runs in his last 12 games to jump to six in batting and seventh in VORP.`

Chicago
Colts hitters were held to 11 hits in 3-1 and 1-0 defeats by San Francisco at the start of a critical three-game set.  The series loss kept the Colts one game out of the playoff spots with six to play. . .  Carlos May has cooled off, with just one RBI in 13 games in September. . .  Chicago finishes the season vs. Denver and at Dallas, teams against which the Colts are 13-5 so far this season.
