Colts Make a Move
Otis, May Key Defending Champs Offense
CHICAGO (June 1)
- The Chicago Colts won 10 of their last 13 to pull within one game of the top four.  The defending champs were 21-23 on May 18, the day they began their hot streak with a 11-4 thrashing of Washington with a 5-RBI day by second sacker Joe Foy.  Amos Otis was the club's hottest hitter in May, batting .278 with 19 RBI, and Carlos May hit .333 with 16 RBI.

The season-ending injury to Stan Bahnsen on April 21 has not hindered the Chicago pitching staff.  Bahnsen's replacement Bill Parson was 3-2, 3.40 in six starts and the staff ace Bill Singer was 4-1 with a 1.81 ERA in six starts.  The Colts beat Boston four games in a row May 19-23, including a 4-3 11-inning win on a Toby Harrah game-winner and an 8-2 rout that featured a 3-hit, 3-RBI game by Otis.

Barons Stay in First Without Reuschel
CLEVELAND (June 1) - The Cleveland Barons maintained their grip on first place despite the season-ending injury to Rick Reuschel on May 15 and tight competition from the Atlanta Hilltoppers and Los Angeles Outlaws.  All three teams were 10-5 in the second half of May, as the Barons maintained their three-game margin over their West Division challengers.  Cecil Cooper is again leading the offense, with 8 HR and 33 RBI, but the club ranks just 11th in runs scored.  J.R. Richard is picking up where he left off last year, with a 7-3 record and 2.69 ERA in 12 starts, but closer Steve Mingori has struggled with a 5.40 ERA and 1.87 WHIP,

The staff suffered a couple blows within two days when Charlie Hough suffered a rotator cuff injury on May 29 and Burt Hooton tore a quad on May 31.  Hooton, a 15-game winner last year, is 3-1, 3.02 in nine starts.

Boston Opens E.R. Room in Clubhouse
BOSTON (June 1) -- Boston's injury woes continued into late May, when starting pitcher Frank Reberger (3-4, 4.21) center fielder Boots Day (.190-0-3 in 15 games), and second baseman Davey Lopes (.266-3-15) added their names to the injury rolls.  Chris Short tore a rotator cuff on April 16 (5 months), Pete Richert tore a hamstring April 19 (2 months), and MVP Orlando Cepeda suffered a severe ankle strain on May 15 (5 weeks).  The Federals are 25-32 in 11th place and sit seven games out of the top four.  Frank Robinson (.314-13-43) and Bernie Allen (.255-14-31) have been the only consistent hitters, and the rotation ranks 11th in the league, but Al Hrabosky (1.96 ERA, 11 saves) and Wayne Twitchell (4-1, 1.03) lead the circuit's best bullpen.

Texans Hit New Low
DALLAS (June 1) -- The struggling Dallas Texans dropped 16 of their last 18 games to drop into the United League cellar.  Fifth starter Luis Tiant has lost seven straight starts and is 0-8 with a 4.64 ERA in nine starts, and Tom Griffin and Randy Jones were both 0-4 in May.  Chris Chambliss, Dave Kingman, and Dave Concepcion all hit below .225 for the month, and Reggie Cleveland has managed to save just four games despite an ERA of 1.54.
