Atlanta Wins 12 Straight
to Capture First Place
ATLANTA (June 16)
- The Atlanta Hilltoppers won 12 in a row, including six
wins over division rivals Los Angeles, to overtake the
Cleveland Barons and move into first place. The
streak included shutouts anchored by Ron Reed, Bruce Dal
Canton, and Nelson Briles, and five multi-hit games by
left fielder Roy Foster, who is hitting .409-5-15 in his
last 13 games. Reed, Dal Canton, and Briles each
have ERAs under 2.50 for the month of June, and Dal
Canton is tied for third in the league with eight wins.
The 31-year-old righthander from California, Maryland
had a 6.28 ERA in his first five starts, but has a 2.23
ERA in nine games since May 1.
Oscar Gamble has found his sweet stroke at the plate,
batting .351 in June. The 24-year-old outfielder
has raised his average 50 points each month.

SAN FRANCISCO (June 16) -
The San Francisco
Spiders won 11 of 14 games during the first half of
June, catapulting the team into a tie with the Chicago
Colts for the final wild card spot. Meanwhile, the Los
Angeles Outlaws headed in the opposite direction, losing
11 of 14 and falling two games behind the Spiders.
To be fair, San Francisco faced a relatively easy
schedule, sweeping Washington, Denver, and Brooklyn (a
combined 27 games under .500) in three-game sets and
taking two out of three from Boston. Nonetheless, the
best pitching team in the UL played to its strengths --
Arachnid starters Bob Moose, Fergie Jenkins, Mike
Hedlund, and Vic Albury were a combined 10-0 in 11
starts with a 1.58 ERA and 1.08 WHIP, and reliever Terry
Forster was 5-for-5 in save opportunities without
surrendering a single run. Even the Spiders' struggling
offense -- worst in the league -- showed some signs of
life as rookie LF Jim Rice hit .449/.491/.816 with 5 HR
and 16 RBI in the first half of June, and RF Richie Zisk
clubbed 4 HRs and drove in 10 runs.
LA's schedule
was a little more challenging, including six games
against the league-leading Hilltoppers (all Outlaw
losses), but they were also swept by expansion squad
Montreal and dropped two of three in St. Louis as
everything that could go wrong did. Outlaw starters were
a combined 1-8 with a 4.24 ERA. The bullpen blew three
saves, including two by Pedro Borbon, who has blown a
staggering eight saves so far this season (and would
have nine if the LA offense didn't bail him out in the
bottom of the 11th against Chicago on June 15). The
defense made 11 errors that led to eight unearned runs.
And the team lost LF Ken Singleton for five weeks when
he strained a rib cage muscle making a diving catch off
the bat of Reggie Smith; Singleton's replacement, Bob
Oliver, hit .208 and made two costly errors. Outlaw
GM/theologian Peter Vays invoked the book of Job, the
Great Flood, a plague of locusts, and Pauly Shore's
career when he stated: "This sucks."
