Hot Sox Surge to Fourth
Melton on a Tear, Sutton Comes Around

MANHATTAN (May 16)
- Eric Holthaus' Manhattan Gray Sox won nine of their last 14 games to pull into fourth place in the United League.  Steve Garvey, Bill Melton, Lou Brock, and Craig Robinson have all hit over .350 in the month of May.  Third baseman Melton, a career .260 hitter, is raking at a .411 clip and won Player of the Week honors May 13, while Garvey is third in the league with 36 RBIs.  Manhattan ranks second in batting average and stolen bases, and fifth in runs.

Don Sutton, who started the season 1-5, is 2-0 with a 3.20 ERA in his last three starts.  But veteran Don Drysdale has not fare so well.  Returning to full-time starting job for the first time since 1969, the 37-year-old righthander is 1-5 with a 5.03 ERA in eight starts.

The Sox have been tipped to improve this season and finish over .500 for the first time since Holthaus took the reins of the club in 1971.

Blomberg Hits Homer Hat Trick
WASHINGTON (May 2)
- Monuments first baseman Ron Blomberg hit the UL's first home run hat trick in two years today in a 6-3 win over the Los Angeles Outlaws.  The 25-year-old homered in his first three trips to the plate--each time off Outlaws lefthander Brent Strom--before flying out in the eighth.  Blomberg was the Monuments second round pick in 1971, was a key contributor in the 1972 championship campaign, and broke out with 22 home runs and 89 RBIs last season.  The Monuments swept L.A., but rank 9th in runs and runs allowed and sit in sixth place in the East Division.

The UL's last homer hat trick was hit by Detroit's Bobby Bonds on Aug. 24, 1972, and the last Washington player to complete the feat was Dick Stuart in 1967.
