TOP STORIES

The top four remained unchanged as the league's top teams all posted identical 8-7 records.  Chicago and Boston each dropped a game, widening the gap between the top four and the rest of the league, but Washington jumped two spots from 9th to 7th and now sits on the fringe of playoff contention.

Manhattan won two of three games from first place Atlanta, including an 8-4 rout that featured five hits by Steve Garvey, and an 11-0 shellacking in Don Drysdale's best start of the year.

Denver's Tom Grieve sits six games shy of Dick Howser's record 30-game hitting streak and won Batter of the Month for the second straight month.  The 14ers slugger lifted his average 24 points in July to .327, entering his name for the first time into the Triple Crown conversation.

Richard Keeps Barons in Trophy Hunt
Cleveland Ace Wins Pitcher of the Month

CLEVELAND (Aug. 1) - J.R. Richard extended his unbeaten streak to seven starts and won Pitcher of the Month honors for July with a 4-0 record and 2.32 ERA in five starts, all on the road.  Cleveland pulled within a game of first place Atlanta after a 10-1 rout of the Hilltoppers on July 20, but have lost six of their last 10 and finished July three games back of Atlanta for first place overall and the inaugural President's Trophy for best regular season record.  Richard (12-6, 2.77) is seventh in the league in ERA and shares the lead in wins.  The Barons boast the league's best home record (40-17) and best record in one-run games (24-15), thanks in part to a stellar bullpen-by-committee.  Five relievers have at least one save and four relievers have sub-3.00 ERAs.

Feds, Mons Injuries Blessings in Disguise?
BOSTON (Aug. 1) -- The playoff hopes of the Boston Federals and the Washington Monuments suffered setbacks this fortnight when both teams suffered key injuries.  Boston sits in 6th place, a good six games out of the four playoff spots, and hopes of catching the Spiders or Gray Sox diminished after the Feds lost RF Mack Jones for most of the remainder of the season, and starter Bert Blyleven and LF Ed Stroud for three weeks.  Or could it be that the injuries are a blessing in disguise?  Jones and Stroud are the club's two weakest hitters.  Mack is hitting .194-3-17 in 74 games and Stroud has a .596 OPS in 47 games.  Jones' shoulder injury and Stroud's strained oblique will force GM Brendan Harris' hand and open the door to some interesting call-ups from Philly, where rookie RF Sixto Lezcano is batting .271 with a .345 OBP in 101 games.  While scouring the City of Brotherly Love for replacement players, Harris might catch notice of 3B George "Boomer" Scott, who leads the Keystones with 10 home runs and 50 RBIs, and might be a tempting stand-in for the struggling Ron Cey (.220-5-19, .653 OPS).

In Washington, the Monuments enjoyed a 9-6 fortnight, including a three-game sweep of Brooklyn that featured shutouts by Don Wilson and Jim Colborn.  Colborn's allowed one hit in eight innings to notch his seventh win and slice his ERA to 4.23.  The seventh place Monuments will finish the season without the services of underperforming RF Pat Kelly, who tore a shoulder muscle on July 24.  Kelly, 29, was hitting .208 with 21 RBIs in 83 games.  But again, Kelly's injury will give more playing time for the red-hot Cleon Jones, who is hitting .353 with a .905 OPS in 24 games, mostly as a pinch hitter.  GM Doug Aiton has fewer options in Triple-A, where the Baltimore Terrapins have the second worst record in the International League.

Contender Notes:
Atlanta remains in first place but Hilltopper fans must be worried a bit by the club's performance against weaker teams.  The Toppers are 8-4 against second place Cleveland but have losing records to Detroit (5-7), and Montréal (1-5).
Cleveland won four of its six encounters with its World Series opponent Chicago this month and took the Colts to 12 innings in a 3-2 game that was lost when a Frank Linzy error allowed former Baron Rusty Staub to score the go-ahead run.
San Francisco lost its ace Bob Moose for the season on July 13, but has held on to third place with an 8-8 record since then.  Moose's replacement, rookie righthander Doyle Alexander, is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in his first three starts.
Manhattan re-upped veteran LF Lou Brock with a two-year extension that will pay the 35-year-old $8.6 million per year.  Brock is batting .303-10-50 with a .807 OPS and 48 stolen bases.  2B Craig Robinson burnished his Rookie of the Year credentials with a hot July.  The 25-year-old hit .355 with a .913 OPS and won Rookie of the Month.
