New
York Loses Loes
Herniated Disc
Sidelines Youngster 8 Weeks
ST.
LOUIS (July 14) -- Gotham starter Billy Loes will miss
at least 8 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. Loes
left the game in the fifth inning complaining of back
pain, and x-rays showed he had herniated a disc in his
back. He had a two-hitter going, when he fell to the
ground after inducing a Gil Coan fly out for the second
out in the fifth. Loes was the Gothams' first round pick
in the 1952 Reentry Draft. In his rookie year, as a
22-year-old, Billy posted a 12-15 record and 4.36 ERA in
31 starts. Through 18 starts this season, Loes struggled
(5-7, 5.18). New GM Jeremey "Weims" Weimer has
several options to consider, including going back to a
four-man rotation, or moving rookie Frank Sullivan into
the rotation.
New York was 5-6 in the first two weeks of
the second half, and remained tied with St. Louis for
third place, thanks to a pair of win June 14 and 15 that
tied their four-game set at Sportsmans Park. Early Wynn
topped Sam Zoldak 2-0 in the series finale.
Miller
Fans 15
Stu Ends Three-Game Skid with K Display
WASHINGTON
(July 12) -- After a three-game losing streak marred a
15-1 start and sent the D.C. sports media into a frenzy
of Stu Miller-is-washed-up stories, the 1952 Rookie of
the Year threw back to back wins, allowing one run in
each win. Miller, who led the league with eight shutouts
last year, has three so far in 1953, but his performance
at Fenway Park on July 12 was perhaps his best game of
the season. Miller struck out 15 Beacons on route to a
seven-hit complete game. Washington won 6-1. Miller
leads the league in the pitching Triple Crown categories
(17-4, 2.23, 154 K), and is expanding his margin in ERA
and wins.
The "Big Three" Monuments in the
nation's capital used to be Washington, Jefferson, and
Lincoln. Now they are Miller, Jansen, and Gromek.
The trio ranks 1-2-3 in ERA, wins, and R/9, even more
dominant than last season, when Washington's starters
were merely in the top five in most categories. Their
excellence is holding back the progress of rookie Don
Larsen, who is the best pitcher in the AAA American
Association with a 12-3 record and 2.91 ERA for first
place Baltimore, which also boasts the second winningest
pitcher in AAA, Carl Erskine (11-5).
Geriatric
Lindell Has 16-Game Hitting Streak, Wins Second POW
LOUISVILLE
(July 13) -- The streak ended at Parkway Field tonight,
but Johnny Lindell hit safely in 16 games before going
0-for-3 against Louisville ace Ned Garver. Lindell, a
third round reentry pick this year, was a gamble. The
veteran will turn 37 on Aug. 30 and was expected to be a
role player. Instead, the affable Coloradan has nailed
down the full-time center field job, more than
adequately filling the shoes of Pvt. Bobby Thomson, last
year's All-Star center fielder, in a league crowded with
stellar CFs. Lindell is hitting .294 with 11 HR and 53
RBI, and cracked the top ten in RBI and OPS this week.
He has had a hot July so far, batting .366 with 16 RBI
in 11 games, earning his second POW award of the season.
Chicago was 6-5 in early July, a game off
of the pace of Washington, whom they now trail by nine
games. Mel
Parnell has won four of his last five starts, with
a 2.03 ERA, and rookie shortstop Ernie Banks ("Mr.
Colt") has been hot, batting .389 in his last six
games, after batting just .257 in the first half.
Wilhelm
Reinvents Relief Role
LOUISVILLE
(July 10) -- Brooklyn's Hoyt Wilhelm invented a new
relief role today, the slugging closer, after pitching
1.2 no-hit innings and launching a three-run homer in
the ninth for a 7-4 win over the hosting Colonels.
Wilhelm, in just his second season, came into the game
with the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth,
with runners on the corners and one out. Pinch hitter
Joe Collins lined out to first baseman Steve Souchock
and pinch hitter Solly Hemus nubbed a dribbler back to
the mound to end the inning. In the top of the ninth
Minoso and Woodling hit back-to-back one-out singles,
and Brooklyn decided to let Wilhelm bat for himself.
Hoyt took a Tom Morgan fastball 409 feet to left-center,
then proceeded to retire Jensen, Bauer, and Easter (Valo
reached on an error) to nail down the win. Wilhelm was
fourth in the league with 32 saves last year, and his 18
saves is tied for fourth again this year. He is becoming
an accomplished hitter, with a career batting average of
.600 (3 for 5).

3.
Lew Burdette, SP - Drafted by STL in '51,

6. Gene Conley, SP - Detroit's first round

Pitching well at AAA Buffalo (2.73 ERA, 7.5 H/9)
despite 7-8 record.
14. Roy Sievers, 1B - A 19th round Inital
Draft pick, Sievers was the subject of hate mail
sent by former owner Frank Thomas to the commish,
complaining of his slow progress.
"Squirrel" has split time between AA and
AAA this year, batting .305 in 105 AB with AAA
Buffalo, but unlikely to see big league action as
long as Gil Hodges is healthy.
17. Paul Foytack, SP - The 22-year-old from
Scranton was the Superbas' third round rookie
pick. Was 4-1, 2.89 in 9 starts for AA Birmingham
on June 8, when a torn elbow ligament ended his
season.

4. Dick Kokos, RF - A first round reentry
pick in '53, 25-year-old Kokos went straight to
power-starved Louisville, where he is hitting
.225-6-16, .471 SLG.
5. Ed Bailey, C - Second round rookie pick
this year, Bailey has had a good start with AAA
Pittsburgh (.295-3-26 in 88 games) and could soon
challenge aging Clyde Kluttz for the starting job.
8. Steve Bilko, 1B - 26th round Initial
Draft pick, moved up to AAA this year, but is
struggling at Pittsburgh (.250-0-7, .296 OBP, .315
SLG in 26 games).
11. Ron Kline, RP - An impressive stint at
AA New Orleans (1.62 ERA, 5.1 H/9 in 44 innings)
last year earned the 17th overall pick in the '52
draft a promotion to Pittsburgh, where he is 2.80
in 35 innings in a mixed role.
13. Wally Post, RF - Once one of the top three
prospects in the league, the 23-year-old's star
has diminished, thanks to slow development, a lack
of power (his trademark), and a stint in the Army
in '52. Still stuck in A-ball, Post still lacks
power (.296-3-32) in Seattle.
20. Billy Klaus, SS - Very late rookie pick
(5th rd, 33rd overall). Aside from ruptured an
elbow ligament on May 9, Billy is having a good
year with AA (.303-6-42 in 87 games).
