Insurmountable?
Mons' Lead Balloons After 14-2 Run
WASHINGTON (June 1) -- Washington's 14-2 run combined with a Chicago slump to nearly double the Monuments' lead to 14 games over the Colts and Gothams. Stu Miller pitched back-to-back shutouts June 2 and 6, and Steve Gromek tallied four wins in four starts as the defending champs pulled so far ahead of the pack that the pennant race might as well be called off.

Stu-Pendous!
Miller, 15-1, Wins Five Straight
WASHINGTON (June 1) -- Last year's Rookie of the Year is well on his way to winning the 1953 Cy Young Award. Stu Miller is 15-1 in 17 starts, with a league-leading 2.10 ERA and a realistic shot at the pitching Triple Crown. Miller has won five straight starts, including a pair of shutouts June 2 and 6 that earned him Player of the Week honors for the first time (he was twice named Player of the Month, including April of this year). Miller is just one win shy of his 1952 total. The righthander, the fifth overall pick in last year's rookie draft, was 16-13, 2.74 in his first season.
