Mons
Unbeaten in First Week of Title Defense
BOSTON
(April 12) -- Defending United League champion
Washington Monuments opened their title defense with a
perfect 7-0 week, including a pair of shutouts. The
champs opened at home against 1951 champions, St.
Louis. Joe Adcock and newcomer Bob Dillinger each had
key run-scoring doubles, to lift last year's Rookie of
the Year Stu Miller to a 6-4 win. Miller later authored
a 4-hit shutout against New York on Friday. Fittingly,
it was Cy Young winner Larry Jansen who threw the
season's first shutout: a 2-hit 3-0 win over New York on
Wednesday.
Washington's quick start and St. Louis'
early five-game deficit prompting Maroons manager
Timothy J. Smith to quip, "That's nothing that
can't be fixed by a strategically-placed line
drive," apparently implying that his team would try
to injure one or more of Washington's pitchers.
"Hey, all i'm saying is that hard hits up the
middle -- I mean real smackers, right through the box --
are a good way to get men on base and produce runs. And
if a certain Cy Young winner happens to take one off the
noggin... well, like they say, it's a game of
inches." Smith was reprimanded for his comments and
later steered clear of the controversy by saying
"gay people don't like hot weather."
Vinegar
Bend Lashes Out at Teammates
By
Mark Allen
"Ah's
pissed as a weasel in a blender!", said Colonels
yo'ng pitcher Vinegar Bend Mizell at th' start of his
recent press cornference. "Fust of all, our dadburn
manager has me in a relief role while guys who is gittin'
shelled git starts!! Ah's out thar bestin' mah
chops while a lot of these guys who is arnin' way mo'e
than me look like they is gwine through moshuns. Hell,
some of them haf even admitted t'me, whuffo' try we is
a-gonna git beat ennyways. Wif attitudes like thet ah
reckon management needs t'take a serious look at thsi
team, dawgone it. ah's gripin' mainly on account o' ah's
a pitcher an' our pitchin' sucks which is a-gonna rub
off on mah repeetayshun. I've got no complaints on th'
offense as they is near th' top in almost all stat's
while these other bum pitchers haf us last in dadburn
near ev'ryone. A lot of these guys jest is outta shape,
mebbe a week o' 2 in mah hometown of Vinegar Bend,
Alabama in th' heat an' hoomidity'd toughen them up. ah
knows I've probably pissed as a possum in the oven a
bunch of them off but eff'n th' shoe fits wears it! Fry
mah hide!! Fry mah hide!"

Right
fielder Jimmy Piersall fizzled in his first week

superfluous.
