WASHINGTON
MONUMENTS
1952 CHAMPIONS

14-0!
Washington Unbeatable in Early Season
LOUISVILLE (Apr. 19) -- The Washington Monuments extended their league-record season-opening winning streak to 14 games today with a 7-1 win over the last place Louisville Colonels. Washington has won four of the games by shutouts, and four more times allowed just one run.  Washington's already outstanding pitching kicked it up a notch to Hall of Fame proportions from April 15-19, when they allowed just three runs in five games. The streak was in peril at the 10-win mark on Thursday, when Detroit's Vic Raschi battled Cy Young-winner Larry Jansen to a scoreless draw for nine innings before Gil McDougald pulled out the win with a 10th-inning single. McDougald was also the hero Wednesday, along with Ted Kluszewski, who both drove in runs in the fourth inning of an otherwise scoreless game.
The contrast between Washington and Louisville could scarcely be more stark. Washington's ERA is 1.79(!), while Louisville switches the digits around for 7.19. The Monuments have allowed just 29 runs in 14 games, compared to the Colonels' 110 runs. Louisville has lost 7 straight, after a 3-4 start. Washington's ERA is now 1.71 runs better than the next best staff (Detroit, 3.50).

Lindell Keeps Chicago Close
BOSTON (April 20) -- Thirty-six-year-old "reentry rookie" Johnny Lindell led the Colts to a 6-1 week, as Chicago nearly kept pace with the runaway Monuments. In any other season, the 11-3 Colts would be the story, but their hot start has been overshadowed by Washington's perfect opening fortnight, and the Colts find themselves, like the rest of the league, as many game behind as they have lost.

Louisville Press Release
Team owner Mark Allen is NOT a happy camper.  He was overheard screaming at the team in a closed door meeting after their recent 7 game losing streak.  Most of what could be heard would not be fit for a marine or a truck driver to hear, let alone a baseball audience.
Other than the expletives, he could heard telling the team that he was at the end of his patience and changes were going to be made.  Shortly after that we saw, Ralph Branca, Herbert and Herm Wehmeier leave the clubhouse with bags packed and train tickets to Pittsburgh (the Colonels AAA affiliate).  An hour later the bus arrived from Pittsburgh and off stepped Lou Kretlow (who will move into a MR spot), Chris Chambers (also going to the pen) and youngster Dick Donovan who is slated to take the #5 starter role.  Wholesale changes are in the works for the remaining staff as only Ned Garver retains his still shaky role as the #1 starter.  Vinegar Bend moves from bullpen to take #2 spot as do Mike Garcia (#3) and former closer Tom Morgan as #4 man.  When asked about the wisdom of moving who is potentially one of the games best closers to starter, Mark said "It's my team and I'll run it the way I see fit.  When any of you candy-assed reporters are willing to fork over millions of dollars you can make the decisions around here.  Besides, what does it matter if we have a good closer when we are losing by 5-6 runs or more going into the 9th!!!!".
In an injury related move, 1953 2nd round draft choice C Ed Bailey is going to see some action as starter Clyde Klutz is out for a week or 2 with an injury.
