Bosman is the Boss
Spider Weaves UL's First Perfect Game
SAN FRANCISCO (Aug. 21) -- Sophomore righthander Dick Bosman threw the United League's first perfect game today, in a 3-0 win over the East-leading Manhattan Gray Sox.  Bosman, 25, was a 2nd round pick of the Spiders in 1968, and went 6-4, 4.29 in 16 starts last year, and is 8-12, 3.88 in 26 starts this year.

The win was San Francisco's third straight shutout victory.  Luis Tiant beat Boston with a two-hit shutout Aug. 19 and Fergie Jenkins threw a five-hit shutout yesterday.  Spiders pitchers have tossed 31 innings without allowing a run.  San Francisco is 12-4 in their last 16 games, climbing out of the West Division cellar.

Toppers Close Gap
Carlton Pitches 41 Shutout Innings, Hunt Hits in 21
Steve Carlton pitched five straight starts without an earned run, and Ron Hunt hit in 21 straight games, as the Hilltoppers posted a 19-10 August record to cut their deficit to 2.5 games behind St. Louis in the West Division.  Carlton was a perfect 5-0 with a 0.00 ERA in five starts, vaulting to the league lead in ERA (2.09) and wins (17).  Ron Hunt's hitting streak spanned Aug. 3-26.  The 28-year-old shortstop is hitting .313 with 160 hits.

Wise Beans Fairly, Fractures Skull

A month and a day after a Gaylord Perry fastball fractured Lou Clinton's skull, ending his career, another UL player has suffered a major head injury.  Manhattan RF Ron Fairly was struck in the head by a Rick Wise fastball, and will miss at least a year.  The spate of serious head injuries has prompted the league to initiate a blue-ribbon panel to look into the issue and propose possible remedies.
