Neil Armstrong became the
first man to walk on the moon on July 20. Harmon
Killebrew, ATL drove in 6 runs, including a third
inning grand slam, in Atlanta's 16-1 rout of Chicago July 21.
Woodie Fryman, BRO pitched eight shutout
innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six in
Brooklyn's 7-0 win over Boston July 22. Paul Schaal,
ATL collected 5 hits in an 11-8 loss to Dallas July 25.
Bobby Del Canton, LA, in just his 3rd UL start,
allowed but a single baserunner in eight innings of work en
route to a 7-0 win over Dallas July 27. Gaylord
Perry, DAL, far from feeling any ill effects from the
horrid skull fracture of Lou Clinton in his previous start,
tossed a four-hit shutout in Los Angeles July 28.

Fractures Clinton's Skull Toppers Lose
Best Hitter, Gaylord Perry Investigated
ATLANTA (July 23) -- Hilltoppers shortstop Lou Clinton was struck in the
head by a Gaylord Perry fastball in the third inning today, in what
doctor's are calling a career-ending skull fracture. Clinton, 31,
was one of the unsung heroes in Atlanta's turnaround the last two
seasons. Originally drafted by Detroit in the 3rd round in 1960,
the Ponca City, Okla. native joined the Toppers in the middle of 1965.
To that point, he had hit just .238 in his career, but in 1966 he
improved to .263 with a power surge to boot (18 HR) and and 1967 he hit
.312 with a .922 OPS, trailing only Harmon Killebrew and Ron Hunt.
Last year, he established career marks in home runs (20) and RBI (78),
and was third on the team in VORP.
Clinton was leading the
club this season with a .402 OBP and 28.5 VORP, and his departure leaves
a gaping hole in the Toppers lineup. Atlanta has the league's
third best offense, and ranks first in on-base percentage, but the
second-string shortstop, rookie Don Kessinger (.214-0-2 in 56 at-bats),
hardly fills Lou's shoes. Atlanta was due to get Jim Palmer back
from the DL in a week and had been closing the gap with first-place St.
Louis, but without Clinton, GM Glen Reed will have to rejigger his
lineup or risk a drop-off in his run production.
Conley
Just Misses Win #300 ATLANTA
-- The Cleveland Barons are the hottest team in the East, closing to
within 7.5 games of first place Manhattan after winning eight of their
last 11. A key man in that run has been veteran right-hander Gene
Conley, who pitched a one-hit shutout in Dallas July 20 and allowed just
five hits and struck out eight against Los Angeles July 25. Those
victories were numbers 298 and 299 for the 38-year-old, but despite
another gem against Manhattan on July 30, he fell just short of securing
his 300th career win. Conley allowed just six hits and one run in
8.1 innings of work, but left with the game tied 1-1, leaving Larry
Jaster to be the pitcher of record when Bernie Allen singled home Johnny
Roseboro to win the game in the 10th inning.
Conley, who won at
least 23 games in eight straight seasons with Brooklyn from 1957-1964,
joined Cleveland a year ago in a deal for Bob Friend and two high draft
picks, but was a disappointing 2-1 with a 3.30 ERA in 9 starts down the
stretch for the Barons, who finished three games behind Manhattan.
He started slow again this year, with no decisions in his first three
starts, before rattling off four straight wins en route to a 7-2
first-half record. A 4-3 win at Boston June 19th was his seventh
win in 10 starts as his ERA dipped to 2.18. But a loss and two
no-decisions since then ballooned his ERA to 2.52, and his July 20 win
was his first in over a month.
Conley is the second-winningest
pitcher in UL history, and would join Lew Burdette in the elite 300-win
club with his next win. Conley is also the career leader in ERA,
with 2.75, and figures to be a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer at the end of
his career.
