FOUNDER'S CUP FINAL: Dallas 6, Cleveland 4
Texas Take the Cup

BOSTON (July 10) -- It's been a rough decade for the Dallas Texans.  Since their inaugural season in 1962 it has been a downhill ride for the purple and black.  Dallas is the last UL team to win hardware.  Boston and Detroit, the other two clubs that have yet to win a pennant or championship, have both tasted Founder's Cup glory.  Boston won in 1963 behind Johnny Antonelli's 23 shutout innings and Detroit won in 1967 and '68.  Coming into this year, Dallas was the only team to never qualify for the Founder's Cup semifinals, having gone 0-5 in knockout games.

Dallas' FC heroes include Bob Bailey, who hit .364 (8-22) with six RBIs in six games, Curt Blefary (.353-2-5), Gaylord Perry, who shut out Boston on six hits on July 4, and Wade Blasingame (2-0, 3.94 in 2 starts).  But the hero of the Final was catcher Duke Sims.  Sims, a 27-year-old in his third UL season, hit 3-for-4, included a 3-run double in the sixth inning that blew open a 2-1 game.  Sims, a second-round pick of the Texans in 1967, is having a breakout year, hitting .295-9-49 with a .826 OPS in 90 games.

Dallas 6, Washington 3
Rookie righthander Jim McAndrew beat Washington on the mound and at the plate, tossing an eight-hit complete game and driving in a pair of runs with a second inning double.  The game was 2-1 until the bottom of the seventh, when the Texans blew it open with four runs.  Johnny Bench doubled and scored on Willie Kirkland's error, then Bob Bailey hit a two-run triple and scored on Duke Sims' double.  The Mons clawed back a pair in the ninth, but Dallas held on for the 6-3 win and a spot in their first Founder's Cup Final.

Cleveland 4, Detroit 3
The Barons foiled Detroit's bid for a Founder's Cup trifecta, eking out a 4-3 win with three late runs off Joey Jay to turn back a 3-1 Detroit lead.  Cleveland scored first on Bernie Allen's first inning double and the scored held at 1-0 until the top of the fifth, when Dick Groat's botched pop-up allowed Bobby Bonds to score and tie the game 1-1.  One inning later, Reggie Jackson launched his sixth home run in four games with Dick Allen on board to give the Griffins a 3-1 lead.  Cleveland tied it back up in the bottom of the seventh on RBIs by Chuck Hinton and Lee Walls.  But Johnny Callison was the hero of the game, cracking a Joey Jay fastball 423 feet to straightaway center to put the Barons up 4-3.  Turk Farrell walked two batters in the top of the ninth, but struck out Johnny Edwards and induced a Denis Menke flyout to nail down the win and Cleveland's second Founder's Cup Final.
