Carlton Finds His Groove
Toppers Atop West as
Outlaws Slump
ATLANTA (May 16) -- The Atlanta Hilltoppers won nine straight to claim
first place in the West Division, led by Steve Carlton, who pitched five
straight complete game victories, setting some kind of record.
Carlton became the league's first seven-game winner with his fifth CG, a
9-1 six-hitter against Dallas on May 9, but the streak came to an end in
San Francisco on May 14, after Carlton was relieved after nine innings
in a 2-2 tie. Carlton, 23, was the first overall pick in the 1967
draft, but struggled last year after a stellar rookie campaign.
The Miami native was 23-7 with a 3.32 ERA and 208 strikeouts in his
first season, but dropped to 12-15 last year, despite slicing in walks
almost in half, from 111 to 64. Through nine starts this season,
Carlton is 7-0 with a 1.71 ERA and 0.97 WHIP, and has allowed two or
fewer runs in seven of his nine starts.
The win streak began on
Apr. 28 with a 6-1 win over Brooklyn, in which third baseman Paul Schaal
homered twice, and ended on May 8, when rookie Tom Timmerman pitched
seven two-hit innings but was bested by Wilbur Wood tossed a one-hit
shutout. Along the way, Harmon Killebrew homered and drove in four
runs in a 12-0 pounding of San Francisco Apr. 30, but Lou Clinton has
been the club's hottest hitter. Clinton drove in the winning run
in an 8-7, 12-inning win over Cleveland May 3, hit a first-inning grand
slam in 6-5 win at Chicago May 7, and has 15 RBIs in his last 14 games.
The Toppers rise was assisted by Los Angeles' slump. The
Outlaws lost 8 of their last 13, thanks to the meltdown of their top two
pitchers. Jim McGlothlin is 0-4 with a 7.48 ERA since his 4-0
start, and ace Fritz Peterson is 1-2 with a 4.66 ERA in his last four
starts.
 Manhattan
Expands Lead MANHATTAN (May 16) -- The
defending UL champions expanded their East Division lead from two games
to seven games in early May with a 12-3 run. Manhattan won eight
straight from May 4-11, including six road wins at Washington and
Detroit. The Sox are averaging a league-high 5.7 runs per game,
and 7.1 per game in May, having scored in double-digits four times in
their last 14 games, including a 17-1 rout of the Monuments in which Joe
Torre drove in four and scored five runs.
Pete Ward and Joe Torre
won back-to-back Player of the Week Awards. Ward, arguably the
single most important player in last year's championship run, is hitting
.370-5-20 with a 1.155 OPS in May, and Torre hit .453 in his last 12
games, but actually saw his average drop, after hitting .467 in April.
The slugging catcher has 66 hits in 36 games and is on the ridiculous
pace to collect 251 hits.
The Sox managed their 12-3 run without
ace Bob Anderson, who pitched a no-decision against San Francisco May 3,
and left the game early with an injury in his next start. Fourth
starter Joe Gibbon has picked up the slack, going 3-1 with a 1.82 ERA in
his last four starts, and Jim Nash, 24, has been a steady influence in
the top half of the rotation with a 3.16 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in nine
starts.
