Bahnsen Seeks Redemption
LOS ANGELES (May 1) -- If the Los Angeles Outlaws are seeking to avenge last year's World Series disappointment, then starting pitcher Stan Bahnsen is their chief avenger.  "Bahnsen Burner" suffered one of the worst World Series in UL history, losing twice, including a nightmarish Game 1 when he was pounded for eight runs in 0.1 innings.  In his first start at Dallas on Apr. 3, he was drubbed for 9 runs in 6.1 innings, causing some to speculate that the shell shock of two postseason defeats has ruined his career.  But the sophomore hurler, determined to erase all memory of last year's postseason and write a new chapter by helping his team to a UL championship, has won five straight starts with a 1.48 ERA, including a four-hit shutout of Manhattan on Apr. 19 to give Los Angeles a 2-1 series win in their first rematch encounter of the season.  Two starts later, Bahnsen outdid himself by tossing a 3-hit shutout in San Francisco to give L.A. a 1-0 win that broke a first place tie with their archrival Spiders.

Los Angeles has the league's leading offense, averaging 5.5 runs per game, enough run support to give Jim McGlothlin a 4-2 record despite a 5.48 ERA.  Ken McMullen (.312-9-26) leads the league in RBIs, co-leads in home runs, and is fourth in VORP.  Coming into this season, McMullen was a lifetime .247 hitter.

Duke and Boog Give Texans a Lift
DALLAS (May 1) -- Duke Sims and Boog Powell won back-to-back Batter of the Week awards, leading the Dallas Texans to a winning record in April despite having the worst offense and third worst pitching staff.  Dallas was a league-best 8-3 in one-run games in April, and second-year closer Jerry Johnson already has more saves (7) in 10 appearances than he had in 55 games a year ago.  Dallas went 9-1 from Apr. 12-23, including five straight against St. Louis and Chicago.  The Texans have won fewer than 70 games for three years running and have cracked the upper division only twice in their eight-year history.

Powell (.352-8-19) leads the Texans in batting, home runs, and RBI and won BOW Apr. 28 after hitting .632 (12-19) with 4 home runs.  The week before, Sims hit .474 with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs.  Sims, a second round pick in 1967, hit .158 his first year and .206 last year, but hit .308-3-15 in 27 games in April.
