Feds Take Barons to the Wire
Boston within One Game of East Lead
BOSTON (Sept. 14) -- The Boston Federals took two of three from the Cleveland Barons and went on to win 8 of their next 9 to climb within one game of the East Division lead.  Orlando Cepeda, Rocky Colavito, and Bobby Tolan have combined for 13 home runs and 43 RBIs in 12 games, and sophomore righthander Gene Brabender has recovered from recent injury woes to go 2-0 with a 2.05 ERA in his last three starts.

Four Boston regulars are hitting .370 or better in September, Granny Hamner (.395), who is one hit away from 2,500 for his career, Joe Cunningham (.389), Colavito (.370), and Rico Petrocelli (.370), as the Federals have scored 87 runs in 12 games (7.3 per game).

Johnny Callison's eighth-inning three-run homer gave the visiting Barons a 6-5 win in their series opener Sept. 1.  The win gave Cleveland a six-game lead with 28 games to play, but Boston is 10-1 since then while Cleveland floundered to a 5-6 record.  Colavito homered twice and drove in seven runs in the last two games of the series, 6-3 and 13-7 wins.

Other highlights:
Sept. 4 -- Boston scored six runs in the eighth to beat Manhattan 6-5.  Cunningham's pinch-hit three-run homer off Cecil Upshaw was the game-winner.
Sept. 6 -- Hamner had four hits and Bobby Tolan homered and drove in three runs in a 10-3 rout of the Gray Sox.
Sept. 7 -- Gene Brabender and Ray Narleski combined for a two-hit shutout, and Cepeda homered twice for five RBIs in a 6-0 whitewashing of Washington.
Sept. 9 -- Six Feds, including pitcher Mike Cuellar, hit seven home runs, including Bobby Tolan's two-run game-winner in the seventh in a 10-9 win over Washington.
Sept. 11 -- A ninth-inning error by Charlie Lau allowed Bill Freehan to score, giving the Feds a 10-9 win over Detroit.
Sept. 12 -- Cepeda homered for the third straight day, and fifth time in five days, in an 8-2 rout of Detroit.
Sept. 13 -- In yet another ninth-inning rally, little-known Mike Ryan hit a two-run homer, the first of his career, to beat Detroit 5-4.

Moose Pegged as Cy Favorite
S.F. Hurler Eyes ERA Record
SAN FRANCISCO (Sept. 14) -- Rookie San Francisco righthander Bob Moose was 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA in three September starts, trimming his league-leading ERA to 1.67 and extending his lead as the odds-on favorite to win the 1968 Cy Young Award.  Moose has fashioned a Gene Conley/Stu Miller-esque stretch since mid-May.  The 20-year-old was the second overall pick in this spring's draft, and started the season with a 2-5 record and 2.28 ERA in his first nine starts.  But since May 7, Moose is 14-1 with a 1.46 ERA.  He leads the league in ERA, strikeouts, and fewest hits and home runs per nine, and his 100.8 VORP is a full 24 points ahead of his closest rival, Cleveland's Johnny Podres.  Moose's win-loss record has no doubt been aided by the league's second best bullpen, specifically closer Paul Lindblad, who has a 0.42 ERA and 7 saves in 24 appearances.  The Spiders are three games over .500 and on pace for their second winning season in three years, following six straight losing seasons.  With a young pitching core of Moose, Fergie Jenkins, Dick Bosman, and Luis Tiant, GM Jeff Tonole feels his club finally has the arms to match the notorious batting potential of Brock, Williams, and Rose.
