Here Come the Feds!
Surging Boston Closes Gap on Slumping Barons
BOSTON (Aug. 16) -- The Boston Federals have a message for all the pundits who predicted a Barons slam dunk after acquiring Gene Conley: not if we can do anything about it!  Boston won 11 of its last 13 while Cleveland stumbled, and the Federals suddenly find themselves in the thick of a pennant race with just six weeks left in the season.

The Federals took four of six from Washington, before winning seven straight over pennant hopefuls Manhattan and Los Angeles.  The timing of the surge was most unlikely, coming just days after injuries shelved closer Ray Narleski and young righthander Gene Brabender with the club sitting 8.5 game back in fourth place.  But southpaw Pete Richert plugged the closer slot nicely, with a 0.00 ERA and one save in three appearances, and the rest of the staff picked up their game in Brabender's absence.  Gary Nolan was especially impressive, pitching nine shutout innings in a 3-2 13-inning win at Washington, and then beating Whitey Ford and Johnny Antonelli in his next two starts.  Mike Cuellar tossed two complete games, and Chris Short shut out the Monuments 3-0 on Aug. 4.

But the club with the second best rotation in the league has also been winning with its bats:
-- Aug. 8: Rico Petrocelli's two-run double in the eighth keyed a 4-2 win over the Sox
-- Aug. 10: Orlando Cepeda's two-run walk-off homer capped a four-run ninth inning rally in a 6-5 win
-- Aug. 11: Granny Hamner had five hits and Bill Freehan won the game with a pinch homer in the 12th in a 6-5 win at L.A.
-- Aug. 12: Jimmy Wynn tied the game with a two-run blast off Antonelli and Petrocelli's 8th inning double won it 4-3
-- Aug. 13: Cepeda had four hits, including a game-winning two-run homer for a 7-5 win in a 17-inning marathon at L.A.
