Cleveland Closes Gap
Woodling to Miss Four Weeks
CLEVELAND (Aug. 16) -- The Cleveland Barons won 13 of 16 games to cut Brooklyn's lead to 4.5 games in the UL's East Division, riding the pitching of a resurgent Billy Pierce (1.00 ERA, 0.70 WHIP in last 3 starts) and a red hot Billy O'Dell (4-0, 2.32 in his last four starts), and the scorching bat of third baseman Eddie Mathews (.302-6-18 in last 12 games).  Mathews (.289-26-91) hit a homer hat trick on Aug. 6 against San Francisco, driving in six runs.  But the club lost outfielder Gene Woodling (.306-6-55), the League's all-time hit leader, to a groin injury on August 10 that will sideline him for up to four weeks.
The Barons won seven straight August 4-11, and while the club's 13-3 run admittedly came against fairly week opponents (all but two games against teams below .500), the surge has boosted the club's confidence and narrowed the gap going into the last six weeks of the season.  "We had a rough patch in late July, and we needed to bust out with some wins," center fielder Richie Ashburn said.  The Barons scored in bunches, destroying the Gothams 19-9 on July 31, led by Gene Woodlling's 5 RBI, and logged 12-5 and 12-3 wins in the first week of August.  But even when the runs dried up, the wins didn't.  Cleveland scored three runs or less in five of their last six games, but still went 4-2 during that stretch.
Two of the club's key contributors at the plate this season have been Hal Jeffcoat (.277-11-65) and Norm Cash (.247-17-59).  Jeffcoat, a 34-year-old outfielder, is having a breakout year after five years in the minors and four years in which he never had more than 50 RBI.  Cash, a 24-year-old, is the leading candidate for Rookie of the Year, leading all freshmen in home runs, RBIs, and slugging.

Spit 'n Polish
Windy City Wonders Making Their Move
by Charlie Qualls
CHICAGO (Aug. 1) --  Watch for flying kitchen sinks as the Chicago Colts hunker down for a race to the finish line.  They don't have the prettiest looking mouth, but they’re not afraid to show teeth as the season moves into its final stages.
Luckily, the tune on the starting rotation’s version of “musical chairs” stops on Carl Erskine or Don Mossi every few days.  These two have double-handedly kept this squad in the hunt for October.  The rest of the staff reads like a “Who Used To Be Who” coffee table book.  Tom Gorman, Robin Roberts and Bill Henry have had trouble hiding their ages this year.  Nearly halfway through the season, help was brought in with the Colts adding Bud Daley, who apparently tripped while getting off the plane and was sidelined immediately.  But “Sticky” Bud is back now and ready to pitch in.  The bullpen has done a nice job holding their ground (Don Elston 2.35, 12 saves).
The Colts batmen share a similar story.  Other than Ernie Banks, who is putting together an MVP-type season (and he would do it too, if not for that pesky Mantle kid), the story has been speed, balance and platooning.  Youngsters Roseboro, Green, Demeter and Brandt, while not exactly setting the league on fire, are having solid years and starting to show why they are the future core of this offense.  New additions Joe Adcock and Hank Thompson have been a huge help as well.
So what’s it gonna take to silence Louisville’s shout-out-loud rotation and SF’s quiet creeping?  The UL’s 7th rated offense needs to kick it into gear. Third starter Bud Daley needs to continue his “keeping it close” way of living.  Certainly one more solid starter (or a key Louisville injury) would make the air in Chi-town a bit more breathable.  In any event, watch for Colts GM Lance Mueller to pull out a stop or two in the quest for his first title.
