Monuments Relive Past Glory
Dominant Pitching Fuels 10-2 Surge
WASHINGTON (June 1) -- The once-mighty Washington Monuments are reliving their glory days, winning 10 of their last 12 games and capturing both Batter and Pitcher of the Month awards for May.  The Mons -- in the midst of a long-term rebuilding under new GM Doug Aiton -- were widely expected to finish dead last in the East Division, and were well on their way to that result after losing their fifth straight game on May 17.  At 12-27, the Mons had the worst record in the league.  But a 5-1 win at Detroit on May 18 turned the tide, inaugurating a run of run of games the four-time UL champions won in Monuments' style -- with dominant pitching.  Washington pitchers held opponents to three runs or less in 8 of the 12 games, led by yesterday's hero Stu Miller (3-0, 1.91 in his last 5 starts) and Pitcher of the Month Don Larsen.
The Monuments' hot streak coincides with Willie Mays' 13-game hitting streak.  Mays hit .344-7-22, with a 1.063 OPS in May, to capture his fifth Batter of the Month award, while #2 starter Don Larsen (5-3, 2.02) took POM honors for the first time.  It was the first time Washington swept the monthly awards since Mays and Carl Erskine doubled up in August 1958.

Founding Fathers: Timothy J. Smith
The Eternal Bridesmaid
#2 of 8 part series by Glen Reed
The commish is often called the eternal bridesmaid because his St. Louis Maroons side have so often finished runners-up. But that's not entirely fair, as the commish has been known to wear bridal attire on occasion, and I'm not speaking from insider information gained during our time as college roommates. To wit, Smith captured the inaugural UL pennant (aka the Kaplan Cup) back of a Cy Young performance from "Sad Sam" Zoldak, as well as a monster trade for Roy Campanella to color the first-ever Cup maroon and gold.

The story of Smith's team can be told from the mound--Zoldak, Pierce, Hutchinson, Burdette, Brissie, and Toothpick Sam Jones were all Maroon entry-draft selections. Smith used those chips to acquire the parts necessary to fuel his long run near the top of the league table in a career that's seen two firsts and a third to go along with five seconds. That tally includes the 1957 West Division winner and a place in the first UL World Series against rivals Brooklyn.

But it was another nemesis that defined the St. Louis experience--the Maroons finished runners-up to Jay Kaplan's Washington Monuments in 1952, '53, and again in '54. Certainly, it was an attempt to vault past Kaplan and reverse this outcome that explains the rash decision to send Campy and others packing in favor of former Monument Steve Gromek, lost by Washington in the expansion draft.

It's true though that such decisions can't be judged on their outcomes, but on the quality of the decision-making process at the time. And Smith did correctly assess that the expansion draft had left the titleholders vulnerable. But in the event, Gromek collapsed in a flurry of injuries and downgrades, Campy won the MVP for another team, and it was Washington that finished second for a change, but not to St. Louis, which produced its lowest-ever finish, a third.

Fast forward to 1959, when Smith completed his eighth winning campaign out of nine. That's an achievement that's second to none; well, other than maybe Jay Kaplan.
