OPENING DAY 1960
Fast Out of the Gate
Barons Sweep Bas in Cleveland
CLEVELAND (Apr. 7) -- The Cleveland Barons took three straight games from three-time defending East champion Brooklyn Superbas and later became the last unbeaten team in the league after starting the year 4-0.  The Barons rallied to edge the Brooks 6-5 on Opening Day, then proceeded to crush Lew Burdette and Whitey Ford in 8-1 and 11-4 blowout wins.  Left fielder Hal Jeffcoat figured prominently in the series, hitting 8-for-14 in the three games, with four RBI and four runs.  Jeffcoat, 34, drafted by the Gothams in the 1951 Initial Draft, earned a full-time starting job last year by hitting .310-9-48 in 117 games.  The West Columbia, S.C. native languished in the Gothams minor league system for years before being selected by the Barons in the 1959 Reentry Draft.  Ex-Suberba Gil Hodges rattled Brooklyn's cage with five RBI -- including a three-run homer off Ray Herbert -- in the series finale.  Hodges, 35, a four-time 100-RBI man, has struggled in recent seasons, batting around .200 since joining Boston/Cleveland club in mid-1958.
After nine games, Cleveland leads the league in ERA, thanks to #2 starter Harvey Haddix (2-0, 2.65) and #3 starter Don Drysdale (1-1, 2.13), and the blemishless relief work of Bob Tiefenauer, Roy Face, and Seth Morehead, who have combined for 7.1 innings of shutout relief pitching.

LOS ANGELES (Apr. 14) --

Chico Marks
Spiders Suffer Loss of Stellar Second Sacker

SAN FRANCISCO (Apr. 11) – The Spiders’ chances of repeating as UL champs took a serious blow today, as starting second baseman Chico Carrasquel was lost for the season with a broken wrist. The injury happened in the fifth inning of 6-2 home victory for the Arachnids. Chico had doubled to deep center in his previous at bat, at what looked to be a brush back pitch from Louisville starter Lou Brissie caught Carrasquel directly on the wrist. The Caracas, Venezuela native was heard to explain, “Eeiiyy Chihuahua that hurt!” and bruising and swelling showed almost immediately. Asked about the injury, Spiders’ GM John Nellis replied, “Yep, that sure sucks. Now I gotta find me a-nutter second baseman.” Carrasquel has held down a spot in the middle of San Francisco’s infield since being plucked from the Maroons roster in the 20th round of the 1955 Expansion Draft. Look for the 3 Million-Dollar Man, Frank Bolling, or perennial minor leaguer Herb “Church” Plews to take Chico’s place on the 25 man roster.
