Just Adcock!

By Charlie Qualls

WASHINGTON (Sept. 15) -- Washington’s Joe Adcock wasted no time displaying his impressive package for new manager Doug Aiton, earning POW honors.  Jerkin’ Joe swung a mighty stick this week, boasting a .480 average while slapping 3 dongs and 9 ribbers!  He polished off his performance with a 10th inning solo poke to stick it to the league leading Superbas. This was a far spit from his only other POW campaign in 1955, when he squoze out a limp-by-comparison .313-3-3.  Adcock, a lifelong Monument has been an upstanding player, and displays his four rings proudly!

A Mantle Peace
What’s In A Nickname?
By Charlie Qualls
BROOKLYN (Sept. 15) -- Mickey Mantle has had many nicknames over the years, but “Journeyman” has never been one of them.  Suddenly “Commerce Comet” takes on a new meaning, as The Mick has now been traded twice in his nine-year UL career.  Perhaps his price tag is the main reason: $10 million seems an exorbitant amount as most teams are strapped for cash.  No matter how you cut it, that's a lotta cheese.  It's tough to swallow when you're slipped a 10 mil Mickey, when 1.6 lands you a mighty Minnie.  These days, less than a million gets you an increasingly inaptly named Lemon, and 1.8 puts the Hamner down on a boomin’ Granny.  You get the idea…

Smoking Gun or Cancer Man?
Maybe someone should have told Brooklyn GM Glen Reed that Mr. Mantle has never played a full season for a winner.  In fact, the Boston Beacons, Mick’s original and longest assignment, didn’t have their first winning season until after they shipped the Mick.  Even the struggling Colts have seemed to take an upward turn since Mantle’s departure.  The Superbas may prove to be “Mantle Proof,” but consider this:  Before adding Mickey’s stick, the Bas were on pace to have possibly the best UL season ever, posting a 63-23 (.733) record, including a 10 game winning streak before the trade.  Since Mickey’s arrival however, Brooklyn’s record is a practically human 33-22 (.600).  This is a team that had only lost 23 games to that point.  Put THAT on your Mantle and display it!
