OPENING
DAY
Leadoff
man Johnny Roseboro had three hits and Don Hoak
homered, but Cy Young winner Carl Erskine was too
much, beating Whitey Ford 4-2 at Griffith Stadium.
The Colts bounced back from an Opening Day
loss to win eight of their next nine. Fourth
starter Robin Roberts won his first two starts,
with a staff-best 2.20 ERA.
Chicago leads the league in ERA (2.60), led by
Roberts (2.20), Whitey Ford (2.25), and Johnny
Kucks (2.57).
Ernie Banks hit .389-2-11) in the first 10 games,
ranking 2nd in RBIs and fourth in OPS.

7-6. Minnie Minoso was 3-for-3.
Platoon

OPENING
DAY
Johnny
Antonelli tossed eight three-hit innings,
but Nellie Fox stole the show with four
hits, three RBIs, and a stolen base. Al
Kaline had a pair of hits and scored twice.
Louisville
had seven straight one-run games (4-3) Apr. 9-15,
including a pair of 10-inning losses at St. Louis
and San Francisco.
|
|
"Moose"
Skowron, a two-time All-Star, leads the Colonels
in batting, home runs, hits, and runs.
|
|
|
|
OPENING
DAY
Gil
Coan drove in three runs and Roger Maris added a
pair, but a three-run ninth inning fell short, as
the Barons lost their home opener 7-6 to Brooklyn
in front of 58,476 at Municipal Stadium.
The
Barons averaged a league-best 41,300 attendance in
their first five home dates.
Hal Jeffcoat hit the first monster clout of the
season on Apr. 14 -- a 494-foot blast off New
York's Tom Poholsky. Jeffcoat, a former
Gotham, was a fourth round Reentry selection.

Center
fielder Roger Maris leads the league in RBI (12),
is 2nd in OPS, and won his first POW

OPENING
DAY
Freshly
acquired ace Bob Porterfield shut down St. Louis
5-1 with a four-hit complete game, allowing just
one unearned run. Elston Howard's two-run
double broke the game open in the fourth.
The
Spiders took two out of three games with the
champion Colonels -- all one-run games. RF
Jim Lemon's 10th inning RBI won the opener
Saturday the 12th, and Juan Pizzaro earned his
first UL win on Monday the 14th.
|

Bob
Porterfield leads the league with a 0.72 ERA and
6.8 Ratio.

OPENING
DAY
Bob

Koufax coughed up eight hits and five runs.
Johnny Podres and Don Gross were solid out of the
pen.
Pining
for Kiner?
The
Griffins are second in batting, but only fifth in
runs scored, due mainly to a league low 21 walks
and only 3 home runs in 10 games. Jim
Greengrass -- who came into the season with one
career HR, replaces Ralph Kiner (297 HR) in the
cleanup spot.

Frank Malzone co-leads the league in batting
(.444) and is fourth in RBI (10).

OPENING
DAY
In
front of a huge crowd of 44, 219 at Arroyo Seco
Stadium, Bubba Church tossed a complete game,
striking out nine, but lost 4-2 to Louisville's
Johnny Antonelli. Rookie Vada Pinson had the
only RBI.
Rookie
Vada Pinson has started his career on the right
foot, setting the plate nicely in the #2 batting
slot with a .364 OBP and 8 runs in 10 games.

Bob

5.3 H/9.

|
|
OPENING
DAY
Bob
Friend was stellar in a 5-0 win, holding Detroit
to five hits and two walks in a complete game
shutout. Hector Lopez had two homers and a
triple to lead the Gothams offense.
Old-timer
Vern Stephens still has some pop in his 37-year
old bat. The former All-Star shortstop
homered and drove in four runs in a 6-5, 10 inning
win Apr. 13. Closer Bob Hooper not only won
the game with two shutout innings, but drove in
the winning run after the bench was spent.

|
OPENING
DAY
In
San Francisco, Billy Pierce struggled, allowing
six hits and four runs in just six innings.
Bob Porterfield held the Dark Reds to just four
hits in a 5-1 loss.
The
Maroons' 'rotation-by-committee' is a flop thus
far. St. Louis has the second worst ERA and
second most runs allowed. Among the five
starting pitchers, only Bob Anderson has an ERA
under 5.00 -- and he is winless. On the
bright side, the club ranks #1 in walks.
Whoop-di-do!
|
|
Willie
"Puddin' Head" Jones homered and drove
in 4 runs in a 6-5 win at Los Angeles on Apr. 12.
|
|
|
OPENING
DAY
Cy
winner Carl Erskine struck out 10 and allowed just
two runs in eight innings as the Mons beat Chicago
4-2. Gil McDougald was 3-for-4, including a
double and a triple. and Steve Boros was 2-3 with
2 RBI.
The
Monuments, whose ballooning payrolls of the
mid-50s forced major belt-tightening under new GM
Steven Giovanelli -- but still 95-59 last year --
are finally feeling the effects of three years of
fiscal squeeze. The Mons rank 9th in both
runs and runs allowed and suffered a 1-7 patch
from Apr. 8-15 in which they were held to two runs
or less in six of eight games.
|
|
Carl
Erskine (2-0, 1.59) leads the club in wins, ERA,
and strikeouts.
