Squeeze My Lemon

Outfielder Helps Expand Spiders' Lead
SAN FRANCISCO (Aug. 16) -- San Francisco's Jim Lemon was the league's hottest hitter in early August, leading the circuit with a torrid .442 batting average (23-52) in 15 games.  Lemon (.340-13-48) has a career-best 11-game winning streak, including six multi-hit games and a 7-RBI game against Brooklyn on Aug. 9.  Lemon, 31, was a 4th round Reentry pick of the Brooklyn Superbas in 1955, but was dealt to the Spiders one month into their inaugural season.  The Covington, Va. native hit .267-4-36 in 103 games during his rookie campaign, and hit .352 in 128 AB in 1956, before emerging as one of the club's most productive hitters.  In 1957, Lemon hit .287-16-93, second only to Rocky Colavito in RBIs.  Like last year, Lemon has split his time between center field and right field.
The Spiders are 10-5 in August, padding their West Division lead by 3 games to 13, as both St. Louis and Louisville sputtered below .500.  The Spiders are pulling off the most dramatic turnaround in league history.  San Francisco was 63-91 last year -- the worst team in the circuit, and ranked 8th in run, 10th in runs allowed.  This year, the club boasts the second best record (71-44) and ranks second in both runs and runs allowed.  A club that never had a 20-game winner in its first four seasons will likely have two this year -- Bob Porterfield won his 20th game on Aug. 15, and Ewell Blackwell (17-6) needs just three wins in the last six weeks.  Both pitchers are 35-years old, suggesting that this year may be the best shot at a championship the Spiders will get for several years.

Left fielder Wes Covington (.292-20-67) is having the best month of his best season.  Covington hit .375-3-11 in 11 games, with a 1.214 OPS.  He leads the club in RBI, co-leads in home runs, and is on pace to establish career highs in both categories.

After a hot start, the Mick is having trouble adjusting to his new environs at the Frank.  The former Boston Beacon and Chicago Colt is hitless in his last 18 at-bats, and is hitting just .209 in his last 14 games.  Despite his recent woes at the plate, Mantle is having his best year -- in terms of OBP (.392), SLG (.518) and OPS (.909) since 1955.
