Whitey Ford Hurt Again
Fragile Southpaw Once More Imperils Colts Pennant Hopes
CHICAGO (Aug. 16) -- For the third time in five seasons, Chicago ace Whitey Ford will miss a chunk of the season after a major injury.  Ford ruptured a tendon in his bicep on August 11, and may not be back on the mound at Wrigley until next spring.  Ford had pitched three perfect innings against the Washington Monuments when he was forced to exit the game after feeling shooting pains during his warm up tosses before the fourth inning.  "The Chairman of the Board" was the first overall pick in the 1953 Reentry draft, after two years of military service in Korea.  He missed five weeks in his rookie season with a rotator cuff problem, then a year later (1954) he missed seven weeks with an elbow strain.  In both seasons the Colts had strong starts are were in contention, and then faded away after Ford's injury.  In 1953, the Colts were in second place when Ford was injured, but faded to a fourth place finish.  In '54, the club followed the same pattern.
Chicago has flirted with first place in the newly formed West division all season, but for most of the year has sat about five games back of Louisville.  The awesome starting trio of Ford, Roberts, and Drysdale and the addition of Gil Hodges to an already potent lineup that includes Ernie Banks and Gus Zernial had many pundits picking the Horses to win the West title.  But after a 2-14 start the recriminations were flying and the season seemed lost almost before it began.  The Colts are 53-47 since their fiasco of a start.  Zernial is six away from the home run record, Banks is putting up another monster year, and Hodges emerged from an ice cold start to have perhaps his finest season ever.
But the pitching has caused GM Lance Mueller headaches.  Despite his 3.22 ERA, Ford is just 11-9.  He was 24-3, 2.89 in 1955, when some say he was robbed of the Cy Young award, and 16-11 last year, despite a an ERA of 3.97.  After 250+ innings in his last two seasons, Whitey felt his health problems were behind him.  But the "Chairman" will now forever be known as the "Fragile Southpaw."

Busy as a Busby
NEW YORK (Aug. 1) -- Gothams outfielder Jim Busby won BOM honors for the month of July.  The 30-year-old Kenedy, Texas native led the league with 40 hits and a .435 average in July, driving in 18 runs.  It was a memorable month for the leadoff hitter.  He started the month with a four-hit game against Washington on July 5 and then a week later hit two home runs against Los Angeles.  In 16 games from June 30 to July 20, 11 of which were multi-hit games, Jim hit .485 (33-68).  It was the first Batter of the Month award for Busby, and the first for a Gotham hitter since Larry Doby in April 1954.
Despite his hitting accolades, Busby cost the Gothams a ballgame on Aug. 8.  Busby has great range in the outfield, but hands of stone.  He gets to a lot of balls, but he makes every play an adventure.  Last season, Busby committed 24 errors in left field, more than twice as many as any other player, for a blunderific .911 fielding percentage.  If anything, Busby is actually doing worse in the field this year.  He already has 20 errors and his FA is .906 in right field and .846 in left.  He hit a new low on Aug. 8 when he committed two errors in the ninth inning of a scoreless game, allowing St. Louis to win 1-0.
Busby was an Initial Draft pick (19th round) and has played 702 games in six UL seasons, compiling a .299 lifetime average.  This may his last year as a Gotham.  Though New York is one of the few teams with no immediate salary constraints, Busby's salary is the largest of the club's nine expiring contracts, at $2.6 million, and new GM Shawn Martin has yet to tip his hand regarding the future direction of the ball club.
