Kaline Gets 6 Hits
Louisville Maintains Lead With Hot Bats
LOUISVILLE (June 16) -- Al Kaline got six hits in a 15-1 drubbing of Washington and Colonel hitters were named Player of the Week three times in four weeks as Louisville maintained a 3.5-game lead in the United League's West Division.
Five players had six-hit games in the league's first two seasons, but Kaline's was the first such feat in five years.  It was also the first time in UL history that a player got six hits without an RBI.  On June 9 at Griffith Stadium, Kaline got hits off of Warren Hacker in the first, second, and fourth; Bud Byerly in the sixth; Lou Sleater in the seventh; and Moe Drabowsky in the ninth.  The 22-year-old center fielder was 6-for-7 in the game, which raised his average 18 points to .314.  The Baltimore native was the second overall pick at the age of 18 in the 1953 rookie draft.  He had only appeared in 19 major league games before last season, when he made a splash as a platoon player, batting .285 with 17 stolen bases in 89 games.  This year, Kaline is a full-time player, leading off against righties (.272) and batting second against lefties (.352).
Colonel hitters have won three of the last four Player of the Week awards, starting with Bill Skowron on May 26 (his second POW of the year).  Ed Bailey won the honor on June 2 with a .588 average and 5 RBI.  Two weeks later slugger Hank Aaron took home the hardware for the first time.  "Hammerin' Hank" hit .560 (14-25) with six RBIs in six games.  Aaron (.283-26-94 in 1956), had just 2 RBIs in 11 games through May 31, but is hitting .475-4-12 in his last 10 games.
Louisville's pitching has cooled off -- Antonelli and Wehmeier have just one win in their last six starts -- allowing Chicago, St. Louis, and most recently, San Francisco, to pull within four games.

Colavito Powers Spiders
Hot San Francisco Narrows Gap
SAN FRANCISCO (June 16) -- Rocky Colavito snapped out of an early season funk to lead the San Francisco Spiders to a 9-1 surge in early June.  Colavito, who hit just .213 with 24 RBIs in his first 46 games, is average more than an RBI game in June.  The 23-year-old right fielder, who was the second overall pick in the 1956 rookie draft, hit .429 with 5 HR, and 12 RBIs in his last 10 games.  Rocky had three games to remember on June 7-10.  In two games at Chicago and one at St. Louis, the slugger pounded out four home runs for 10 RBIs.  Veteran second baseman Red Schoendienst made the most of his recent callup, batting .480 (12-25) in his first nine games as a Colonel.  Red was a .289 hitter in six seasons with St. Louis and Chicago.
Starters Ewell Blackwell and Bobby Shantz are each 2-0 in June.  Blackwell was 2-4 with a 5.14 ERA in his first 9 starts, but has a 3.21 ERA in his two June starts.  Shantz held Los Angeles to five hits in eight innings in a 4-2 win on June 14.  Closer George Zuverink (2.52, 17 SV) has not allowed an earned run in 10 appearances, and has allowed just one in his last 15 games.  The Spiders have 13 wins by one-run, tied for the most in the league, including six of their last 12 wins.

Louisville Happenings
by Mark Allen
With fan interest peaking at its highest level ever, Louisville announced some possible changes/additions to increase fan interest even more.  None of these are set in concrete yet but are being investigated as to the feasibility.

1.  There is talk, with all the potential power on this team, of moving the fences down the RF line, RF and RC in 25 feet.  The team is also thinking of lowering the wall in LF down to 15 feet.

2.  The team is also working with the Louisville Slugger bat company of building a Louisville Slugger Museum which would be adjoined to the stadium.

Despite the team's seeming intent on staying in the Bluegrass State, team owner Mark Allen has reportedly been making weekly trips to New Orleans and has been seen meeting with community leaders and various financiers.  The only thing he will say when asked about it is "No comment, it's personal business".  He also has been repeatedly seen in the company of Hooters Galore a famous local stripper.

Offseason acquisitions are tearing it up in Buffalo, with three players posting 1.000+ in OPS: Joe Astroth (.332-17-55), Al 'Fuzzy' Smith (.338-10-48), and Jim Delsing (.356-9-32).  Harry 'Suitcase' Simpson, freshly demoted from the parent club, belted out 7 home runs (.741 SLG) in his first 14 games with Buffalo.

Lindy McDaniel's days in Milwaukee are numbered.  AAA's premier closer is 4-1 with a 2.01 ERA and 13 saves.  In three seasons in AAA, Joey Jay's ERA never strayed from the 3.80-4.00 range.  But the youngster is putting together his best year (7-5, 3.29) and is on pace for career (AAA) highs in wins, innings, and strikeouts.

Granny Hamner had three straight 4-hit games against New York June 8-10.  The Brooklyn shortstop is hitting .500 (29-58) with 4 HR, and 17 RBI in 13 games, and was named Player of the Week 6/9.

Roger Craig (2.63) and Bob Friend (2.97) have the top two ERAs in the league.  Craig, a #1 pick in 1956, is 6-5, and Friend, 25, but in his seventh pro season, is 9-2.  Friend spent the last three seasons continually with the big club and is fighting to get back.  Also notable is Billy Loes (5-0, 0.00 in 29.1 innings.

Player Development
P Howie Judson - better endurance
P Bill Fischer - better stuff, better command

1B Frank Torre led the American Association with a .403 average and 1.079 OPS, earning him a June 1 callup to the big club.  At 38, Pat Mullin is having a solid season in Philly, batting .308-10-42.  The only pitcher of note is Ernie Johnson, who has a 2.00 ERA in 19 appearances.

Player Development
P Carl Scheib - better endurance
RF Bob Borkowski - better OF range

At 23, 'Marvelous' Marv Throneberry is rated the #1 prospect in the league.  The fourth round 1955 pick is batting .337 with 58 RBI and a 1.035 OPS.  After 3+ seasons with Single-A Albuquerque, 2B Jack Dittmer (fifth round 1952 pick) leads AAA with 96 hits, and is batting .337-18-49.  Bill Henry is 4-0, 1.50 in hybrid starter-reliever role.

Bob Cerv (1.295 OPS in 22 games) and Hoot Evers (.991 OPS in 22 games) have been yo-yoing up and down the Mississippi River all season.  Neither has stuck in St. Louis, but both are apparently dominant in more northernly climes.  Paul 'Lefty' Minner is the only hurler of distinction (2-0, 3.54 in 20.1 innings).

Whitey Ford (7-6, 3.21) won six of his last seven decisions, including three in a row.  On June 14 at St. Louis, the "Chairman of the Board" fanned 11 Maroons in a three-hit shutout.

Wes Covington was demoted to make room for Jim Lemon, and is terrorzing the AAA circuit.  Covington is hitting .359-23-60 in 59 games, with a 1.152 OPS.  No other Atlanta hitter has as many as 5 home runs.  True rookie Juan Pizarro (this year's 5th overall pick) should see Seals Stadium this year.  The 20-year-old Puerto-Rican has already been promoted twice and is 5-2, 2.32 in 7 starts with Atlanta.

Player Development
P Bob Turley - increased endurance (5)
SS Solly Hemus - more power

Dallas has three of the top four slugging percentages, led by 1B Norm Sieburn (.746), who has already cranked 26 home runs, second only to teammate Del Ennis (.319-29-70, .711 SLG).  True rookie Ed Bouchee is hitting .308-21-57 (4th in HR and SLG).  Pitcher Erv Palica leads the league with 9 wins, and is fourth with a 3.84 ERA.
