THOMAS
REACTS TO McCULLOUGH
Asked about Clyde McCullough's recent
surge, and his being awarded player of the week
for September 24th, the Superbas' manager sat back
in his chair, clasped his hands behind his head,
and smiled around his unlit cigar.
"Well, you know, Clyde has given us 100% from
the get-go. And nobody could be happier than we
are that he's gone on this tear. Heck, we're still
playing ball here. I've told you fellas--you
print-hounds--my guys play hard. They don't know
any other way. And, when Clyde came to us, along
with Hutch, we knew we were getting our kind of
ballplayer. I wish we could sign him up for next
year, and for years after that. He knows that. You
ask him. But we gotta make room for our young
fellas, you understand."
Then, the manager came forward in his
chair, put his elbows on the desktop, and slapped
his hands down on the desk. "And I'll tell
you one thing right now, and you can write it in
your papers: next season is going to be a
different season from this season!"

Clyde's
Ride
Campy's
Replacement Gets 6 Hits in a Game
LOUISVILLE,
Kent. (Sept. 19) - Brooklyn catcher Clyde McCullough
exploded for six hits, including two homers and a
game-winning two-run single in the 13th. McCullough, who
joined the Superbas in the Campanella trade with St.
Louis, was batting .272 coming into Wednesday's
6-for-7 game, which raised his average 15 points.
Louisville led 5-3 in the seventh, when
McCullough sparked a 3-run rally with a leadoff home run
for his third hit. The next inning, he padded the lead
to 7-5 with his second solo homer and fourth hit of the
game. After the Colonels scored a pair in the ninth to
tie the game, Clyde got his fifth hit with a 12th inning
double, scoring on Phil Cavarretta's single. But Dale
Mitchell's RBI single tied the game 8-8 in the bottom of
the 12th, and after Davey Williams and Steve Souchock
singled off Hal Brown in the 13th, McCullough singled
home two runs for his sixth hit, and Russ Meyer retired
the side for the 10-8 win.
McCullough joins Detroit's Stan Rojek as
the only players to get six hits in a game. Like Rojek,
McCullough is an unlikely candidate for a six-hit game.
Coming into this season, the 34-year-old catcher was a
career .249 hitter, hit better than .260 only twice in
eight seasons. The catcher's best year was 1946, the
year he returned from military service, in which he had
career highs in batting (.287) and slugging (.417).
Clyde is apparently making a point in
September. The day after his six-hit outburst,
McCullough hit 3-for-4, including another homer and
another 4 RBIs. The former Cub and Phillie hit just .182
in his first month as a Superba, but is hitting .480
with 5 homers and 14 RBIs in 15 games since he was
refused a contract renewal on Sept. 1. Odds are that the
veteran backstopper will be playing for his third UL
team come Opening Day 1952.
On
the Brink
St.
Louis Keeps Winning, Closes in on UL's Inaugural Pennant
St.
Louis won seven straight, including mini-sweeps of
Boston, Washington, and Chicago, building a four-game
lead with six games to go. Vern Law and Sam Zoldak
stymied Washington to start the week; the Maroons swept
the Monuments in D.C. 5-2 and 2-1. Back
home to Sportsman's park, St. Louis took a pair from
Chicago. The Maroons are 7-1 in their last eight
meetings with the Colts, a record that has kept the
Colts at bay. In Tuesday's game, Preacher Roe blew a 4-1
lead in the eighth, as pinch hits by Don Kolloway and
Red Schoendienst gave the Maroons a 5-4 win. On
Wednesday, Billy Pierce threw a 7-hit complete game and Johnny
Wyrostek hit two homers in an 8-2 win. Wyrostek took
the injured Gil Coan's place in the lineup and is
batting .429 in September. It has been that kind of
season for St. Louis. When Clyde McCullough was slumping
earlier in the year, AAA call-up Hobie Landrith hit .356
in his first 13 games. When 2B Don Kolloway was called
up during Red Schoendienst's slump, he drove in 3 runs
in his first game and had 4 hits in his second. The
Maroons have always had the right man at the right time
this season.
Detroit
Won't Play Dead
Hot
Sound Climbs to Second, Clings to Hope
Detroit Sound won eight straight games, to overtake
Chicago for second place and keep pace with St. Louis
while Chicago, Washington, and New York all effectively
dropped out of the race. The Sound was 12-3 from
Sept.4-21, as Joe DiMaggio continues to have one of the
best months of his long career. Joe is hitting .450 in
18 September games, with 5 homers and 18 RBIs. Detroit's
pitching has stepped up in the homestretch as well.
Robin Roberts is 4-0 in his last 6 starts, and Bob
Porterfield is 2-1, 1.71 in his last 3 starts.
Detroit sits four games behind St. Louis with six
games to play, but if they can cut the lead to two by
Saturday, will have their destiny in their own hands
with two final games at Sportsmans Park to decide the
pennant.
Jackie
Jumps into Batting Race
Robinson
Poised to Take First UL Batting Crown
NEW
YORK (Sept. 24) -- Having missed five weeks to a groin
injury, Jackie Robinson's name was missing from the
league leader boards for most of the season. But this
week, Jackie surpassed the minimum plate appearances
threshold and made his first appearance on the league
batting leaders chart, debuting at #1. Jackie was
hitting .369 at the time of his injury, and aside from a
cold July, has hit .383 or above each month since coming
off the DL -- a feat which went largely unnotice because
he flew under the plate appearances radar. With six
games to go, his .363 average is 23 points ahead of Joe
DiMaggio and 29 ahead of Minnie Minoso, who lead the
league for most of the season. Jackie needs 17 plate
appearances in the last six games to qualify for the
batting crown. Jackie also leads the league in OPS
(1.017), raising the prospect of a MVP bid for a player
who played in less than 110 games. Could it be?
