Willie Goes to Washington

Campy, Newk, Stan the Man among first round selections
NEW YORK (Feb. 1) -- Jay Kaplan's Washington Monuments today made rookie phenom Willie Mays the United League's first ever draft pick. The selection came as little surprise, but what was a bit of a shocker was co-phenom Mickey Mantle's smooth slide through the first round. Charlie Qualls' "all pitchers, all the time" strategy was thrown out the window when the Commerce Comet was still swimming in the draft pool after seven picks. The Boston GM took pitcher Warren Spahn with his first round pick, and then swiftly snapped up Mantle.
New York GM Gregory Bish took the opposite approach, deferring on pitching until the fourth round -- a strategy that paid handsome dividends, in the trio of
Ted Williams, Jackie Robinson, and Gil Hodges. St. Louis was the first team to draft three pitchers, and Detroit was the first to draft a pure reliever (closer Clem Labine), as Washington will likely use Harry Perkowski in a starting role.

OUTFIELD ADVENTURES AWAIT IN LOUISVILLE
Unusual dimensions and 'Red Monstah' among challenges at converted minor league park, Mark Allen reports

LOUISVILLE, Kent. (Feb. 1) -- Louisville's Parkway Field is gonna be an interesting place to play the outfield.  With a fairly short distance (330 down the line 345 to left field) and the "Red Monstah" 40 foot brick wall, whoever plays left for the Colonels is going to have his hands full.
In watching some of the players invited to Louisville for tryouts a number of the outfielders misplayed balls lined off the wall which led to the ball caroming back and being fielded by the 3B or SS!!!  Another factor is not only are bricks hard (be interesting to see how many LF's crash into it!!) but the construction is not the smoothest leading to some strange bounces and lots of triples.
The Colonels CF will have an easier job as LC is a more reasonable 380 while CF is a fairly short 390 which should lessen considerably the ground he will have to cover. The CF is gonna have to help out the RF though as the deepest part of the park is RC at a whopping 420 while RF is 405. The 'Red Monstah" tapers to a mere 15 ft from LC to C but still is brick. From there the wall turns into a wooden fence a paltry 5 ft in RC and RF and then only 3 ft in RF.  We saw a number of players flip over those walls while making running catches during the workouts.
Construction is under way to add the 4,000 bleacher seats (on top of the brick wall in left) and should be ready by July 1, 1951.  Construction has also begun on the additional 4,000 regular seating down the first base line and in RF.  That construction is scheduled to be completed by opening day 1952.
