Maroons Eye Pennant
After Winning Key Series With Chicago, St. Louis Takes Three-Game Lead Into Last 12 Games
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Sept. 15) -- A series win at Wrigley Sept. 1-3 helped the St. Louis Maroons maintain their lead over Chicago and Washington as the inaugural United League season enters its final two weeks. Despite losing seven of their next eight games after winning the first two against the Colts, neither Chicago nor Washington was able to exploit the opportunity. Chicago was 4-4 during the Maroons' slump, and Washington was suffering through a five-game skid in key games against second division Brooklyn and Louisville. The Monuments subsequently won six of seven to join Chicago in a second place tie, but St. Louis has a three-game lead going into the last 12 games.
Sad Sam Zoldak continued his march toward the League's first Cy Young Award, despite losing to Chicago 5-4 on Sept. 3 on Yogi Berra's three-run homer in the eighth. The loss was Zoldak's first since July 12 and snapped an unbeatedn streak of 11 starts. Sam bounced back to notch his 22nd and 23rd wins over Detroit and Washington, a pair of teams still in the hunt for the UL crown. The Sept. 7 win was a 3-2 squeaker in St. Louis, ultimately won by Del Ennis' RBI single in the eighth, and win #23 on the 13th was a five-hit 11-0 blowout -- Zoldak's third shutout of the year.
Roy Campanella hit 4 home runs and drove in 10 runs in the first half of the month. Campy was the key man in the 7-3 win at Chicago Sept. 2, and hit 4-for-4 with a homer and 3 RBI in the Sept. 13 blowout that snapped the Maroons out of their 1-7 slump.
Returning home to Sportsmans Park, the Maroons took a pair from Boston, 3-2 on Friday on Pat Mullin's 10th-inning single, and 3-1 on Saturday on a Pierce-Hansen-Kinder 5-hitter. The two wins coupled with two Chicago losses to Detroit to expand the Maroons' lead (which Chicago had whittled to one game by Sept. 13) to three games.

Coan Out for Season
Leftfielder Gil Coan broke his hand making a catch Sept. 9 and will miss the rest of the season. Coan was a key, if unsung, contributor to the St. Louis offense, batting .294 with 60 RBIs in 119 games. The week before, on Sept. 1, both pitcher Billy Pierce and rightfielder Pat Mullin picked up minor injuries in the 3-2 win over Chicago. Backup catch Jim Hegan was the hero of that game, driving in the winning run with a pinch hit in the ninth.

Magic Number Is 10, But Race is Tight
The Maroons' magic number is 10, but Chicago, Washington, and Detroit are all within four games of first place. Washington is riding a 6-1 crest while the Sound have won three straight, setting up a possible four-team mixup for the season's final "quasi-playoff" week.

Race Wide Open, but Must-Wins Ahead for Contenders
Chicago, Washington, Detroit Poised for Last-Minute Surge
CHICAGO
The league's "slumpiest" team for the last couple months is only three games back and can't be counted out. Opens week with a pair of home games against New York before traveling to St. Louis for two crucial games. Finishes week back at Wrigley for a pair vs. Louisville.

WASHINGTON
Team strengths continue to be pitching (1st in ERA, OBA, and runs allowed) and power (1st in home runs, 2nd in slugging). Could still overtake St. Louis and grab the pennant, but it would require Duke Snider (.304-35-106) to stay hot and Steve Gromek (16-10, 3.56) to snap out of his funk (1-3, 7.23 in last four games). Similar schedule to Chicago this week, with two-game home series with St. Louis and New York either side of a two-game visit to Fenway.

DETROIT
The Sound sit four games behind, and don't have the benefit of head-to-head games with St. Louis. But they do have more home than road games remaining (like Chicago and Washington), and they get to play Louisville AND Boston. The 35-year-old Joe DiMaggio has carried the team in September, batting an incredible .727 (16-22) in his last six games and .489 for the month. The three "Rs" (Roberts, Raschi, and Rush) will have to maintain their solid form.
