Washington Surges into Second
Newcomers Nash, Callison Vault Mons
WASHINGTON (Aug. 16) -- Jim Nash (3-0, 1.50) and Johnny Callison (.372-2-12) led the Washington Monuments to a 10-3 fortnight, vaulting the also-rans ahead of Brooklyn and Boston for second place in the East Division.  Washington took two of three at Cleveland to start the month, then won series over Detroit, Dallas, and Brooklyn.  Ron Santo homered and drove in four runs in a 12-5 blowout of the Griffins Aug. 6, Bud Daley pitched a four-hit shutout two days later, and Callison and Floyd Robinson had three hits each in a 12-8 win over Brooklyn Aug. 11.
The Monuments briefly led the East as late as the end of May, but a 6-16 June and 12-13 July found the club buried in fourth place and apparently out of the race, but the club's hot August has again revived pennant hopes in the nation's capital.  Washington was 2-10 in the first dozen meetings with Cleveland, but won three of four in August.
The key game of the surge was probably the come-from-behind win at Cleveland Aug. 2.  Trailing 4-1 after seven innings, the Monuments tied the game with Callison's bases-loaded double, then plated two in the ninth to steal victory from the Barons bullpen.

Texans Climb From Cellar
DALLAS (Aug. 16) -- Gaylord Perry won four straight starts after a 2-14 start, to help lift the Dallas Texans out of last place.  Perry beat Brooklyn 2-1 with a 10-inning complete game effort July 30 to end a 11-start winless streak, then proceeded to defeat San Francisco three times in eight days, as the Texans overtook the Spiders.  Dallas played San Francisco 10 times from Aug. 1-13, winning nine, including five by one run.  The low point for the Spiders came on Aug. 13, when they homered twice off Tug McGraw in the 13th inning to take a 10-6 lead, only to have the Texans re-tie the game by two-run homers by Marv Throneberry and Rod Carew.  Bill Sarni drove the winning run two innings later.  Throneberry drove in 15 runs in 12 games, but Carew was the hitting star for the Lone Stars, hitting .414 (24-59) with a .975 OPS in 13 games.

Atlanta 5-2 Against Colts
ATLANTA (Aug. 7) -- After splitting the first four games of a seven-game home-and-away series, the Hilltoppers won the last three games to increase the distance between them and the faltering Chicago Colts.  Steve Carlton tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener at Chicago on Aug. 1, and Ron Hunt was 5-for-5 in a 9-6 win in game two.  The Colts won the next two games 3-2 and 3-0 behind pitching gems by Lew Burdette and Bill Singer.  But a 12-hit barrage buried George "Lefty" Brunet in a 8-2 rout in game five, Bob Veale anchored a 5-hit shutout in game six, and Eddie Mathews homered twice in a 6-1 win in the finale.
Atlanta is 9-5 in August thus far, but Los Angeles has kept pace and remains just four game back.  The Outlaws were 9-2 in 11 games with St. Louis, winning handily in five 5-run blowouts.  Second baseman Felix Mantilla won player of the week honors Aug. 14, hitting 11-22 with 3 homers and a 1.547 OPS in six games.
