Ford
Hurls No-Hitter for Monuments
Does Feat Presage Title
Challenge?
WASHINGTON (Aug. 6) --
Newly acquired ace Whitey Ford turned in a no-hitter just two
weeks after joining his new club, blanking the Detroit Griffins
and striking out 10 in a 4-0 win at Griffith Stadium. The
"Chairman of the Board" was the #1 pick in the 1953 Reentry
Draft and spent seven years in Chicago and four and a half years
in Brooklyn before donning the royal blue and white on July 20.
Ford already tossed a two-hit shutout in his second Monuments
start on July 25.
The 35-year old is 5-2 in his first seven Washington starts,
running up his lifetime win total to 192, fifth on the all-time
list. The lefty also ranks third all-time in strikeouts
(2,500), fourth in ERA (3.11) and shutouts (31), fifth in
winning percentage (.676), and eighth in complete games (137).
GM Doug Aiton's acquisition of Ford just months
after the signing free agent Johnny Antonelli turns Washington
into perhaps the leading contender to challenge Brooklyn's East
Division supremacy, but the clock is ticking and Aiton hopes to
capitalize on the window of opportunity between now and his dual
aces' twilight years. Antonelli (19-8, 2.77) is still
going strong at age 34, needing just one win for his sixth
20-win season in seven years, but has dropped a notch from his
back-to-back Cy Young seasons in 1961 and '62.
