Colts, Bas Top Groups Behind Demeter, Hamner
FOUNDERS CUP 1964
· LOS ANGELES

LOS ANGELES (July 7) -- A four-time MVP and a nearly emerging star helped lead their teams atop their groups in the First Round of the third Founders Cup.  Chicago and Brooklyn were both 4-1 in group play, earning the top seeds in the single-elimination second round.  The Colt's Don Demeter (.300-18-58) homered in the ninth to win the Colts' first game, and drove in three runs and homered again in game 2 against St. Louis.  Overall, the 29-year old center fielder hit .368 (7-19) with 2 HR and 6 RBI in five games.  Other teams qualifying from Group A were Dallas, St. Louis, and Cleveland.  The Texans advanced in dramatic fashion on Boog Powell's 14th inning home run in their final game.
In Group B it was all Brooklyn, led by 4-tim MVP Granny Hamner, who hit .526 (10-19) with 12 RBI.  Brooklyn outscored their opponents 44-6 in four wins, before losing 2-1 to Los Angeles in their last game.  Manhattan was also 4-1, as Wehmeier, Anderson, and Chance had solid outings, but finished second in the group with a much lower run differential.  Boston (2-3) backed into third place with three straight losses, and Los Angeles grabbed the final quarterfinal spot with Hector Lopez' game-winning single in the 9th in a 2-1 win over Brooklyn.
In the most compelling quarterfinal matachup, the top two teams in the West, Chicago and Los Angeles, will face off.  The other games are Dallas vs Boston, Brooklyn vs Cleveland, and Manhattan vs St. Louis.

Eddie Money sez: “Take Me Home Tonight”
CLEVELAND (July 1) -- The third time was the charm for third baseman Eddie Mathews and the Cleveland Barons.  After two previous offers apparently left a bad taste in Mr. Mathews’ mouth, he finally signed on the chalk line, getting the contract he was asking for all along.  A spokesman for the Barons head office said, “We certainly didn’t want to insult our top slugger, we were actually just trying to pin him down for more years, while increasing his overall bottom line, but he had a figure in his head and we admire his tenacity for sticking to it.  In any event we’re thrilled Eddie’s sticking with us.  There’s no question he deserves every penny.”
The new contract keeps Mathews at the Barons table though the 1967 season for a whopping $10.6 million per year, plus incentives.  An MVP performance lands him an extra $1 million.  To this point, the seven time All-Star had easily been one of the UL’s best bargains, perennially showing up among the league’s best mashers, while pulling down a maximum of $3.3 million a season.  As one clever Barons exec put it, “He’s been a shark at trout prices.”  But those monster teeth are finally chomping on serious chum.
   Rumors have been sw
irling about the possible trade of Mathews as the Barons have been undergoing a youth movement as of late.  Fans and pundits question whether Eddie’s age and new contract are the best fit
for the rebuilding Barons.  The Barons don’t deny the shopping of their star, but they also understand his value.  “Eddie Mathews redefines the phrase ‘Hot Corner’ with every game he plays,” said Qualls, “you tend to want to hang onto players like that.”
