Red-Hot Robinson's Hat in MVP Race
Threatens HR Record, Leads LA to New Heights
LOS ANGELES (Sept. 1) -- Frank Robinson belted 11 home runs in August, surpassing Ernie Banks and Harmon Killebrew and inching closer to Gus Zernial's six-year old single-season record.  Robinson won Batter of the Month in August, batting .333-11-23 with a league-best 1.111 OPS.  The 28-year-old left fielder is hitting .303 and slugging .577 this season, leading Los Angeles to its best year in its eight-year history.  Robinson has grown his home run total for four straight years, and has raised his average 56 points over last year.
Los Angeles, a 1955 expansion team, finished .500 in its inaugural year but has since suffered seven straight losing seasons.  The biggest turnaround this year has been in LA's pitching staff.  Once one of the circuit's weakest pitching teams, the Outlaws rank 3rd in ERA, led by ace Art Mahaffey (19-8, 3.35), who is a win away from becoming Los Angeles' first 20-game winner, and Jim Bunning (13-13, 3.08), who is poised to post the best ERA in club history.

Changing of the Guard?
Boston, L.A. Among New Contenders
BOSTON (Sept. 2) -- Boston, Los Angeles, and Washington are on pace for the first winning seasons in years, perhaps signaling a changing of the guard among the league's also-rans.  While Brooklyn and Chicago cruise toward their seventh and third straight division titles, the other 10 teams of the league are churning under them.  Detroit and Louisville, two of five winning teams a year ago, are now among the bottom three, while Boston, Washington, and Los Angeles--all 5th and 6th place a year ago, are poised to land in the top half.

UP:

Boston - record (73-61, 2nd place), last year (71-91, 5th place), last winning season: 1956
Los Angeles - record (75-60, 2nd place), last year (70-92, 5th place), last winning season: never
Washington - record (69-66, 3rd place), last year (67-95, 6th place), last winning season: 1958

DOWN:
Louisville
- record (49-86, 5th place), last year (82-80, 3rd place), last losing season: 1959
