First to 10 Wins
Resurgent Colts' Fourth
Starter Unbeaten
CHICAGO (May 16) -- Colts righthander Ray Herbert, in his
13th UL season, is having one of the most dramatic and
surprising breakout seasons in the history of the league.
Herbert has not held down a starter job since 1958, when he led
the league in losses. He spent the most of the last three
seasons in Triple-A Buffalo, logging just 18 innings in the big
leagues. Louisville's 14th round pick in the UL Initial
Draft in 1951, Herbert's career record coming into this season
was 56-84, with a 4.56 ERA. Yet the veteran from Detroit
has emerged as the most dominant starter on the league's most
dominant rotation.
Chicago GM Lance Mueller raised some eyebrows when he signed the
32-year-old journeyman to a 4-year, $3.12 million contract this
offseason. But six weeks into the season, Mueller's
signing of Herbert is turning out to be one of the best free
agent signings in since the Reentry Draft was abolished in 1959,
which, oh by the way, was the last year Herbert lost a game.
Herbert has notched a win in each of his 10 starts this season and
is tied with teammate Tom Sturdivant with the league's lowest
ERA (2.00). His sudden transformation from a spare part to
a top-tier starter further consolidates Chicago's grip on the
West Division. The Colts were 21-7 in April, quickly
building a 7.5 game lead as they seek their three straight
division title.

How Long
Will Bas, Colts Dominate?
A quick look at the ERA
leaderboard tells the story of the last few seasons in the
United League. The league's top seven pitchers play for
two teams. The Chicago Colts and Brooklyn Superbas have
again jumped to early leads, and their pitching staffs are the
biggest reason. The two clubs have allowed less than three
per game, and the gap between them and the rest of the league is
a widening chasm. The margin between the Colts and and 3rd
best pitching team is 1.4 runs per game, while the margin
between 3rd and last is just 0.9 runs. The two staffs are
simply in a league by themselves thus far this season. Tom
Sturdivant, the Colts' "worst" pitcher in terms of
WHIP (10.2) is better than the
best pitcher on eight other teams.
