Surging Brooks Nearing Pennant
Superbas Win 10 Straight, Burdette on Fire
BROOKLYN (Sept. 25) -- Defending champions Brooklyn went on a 10-game winning streak, quelling fears that the Washington Monuments might overtake them in the final weeks of the season.  Brooklyn's lead was sliced to one game after the Mons won 10 straight Sept. 5-15.  But the defending champs emerged from a 3-4 mini-slump with their own 10-game surge (Sept. 13-23).
September heros include starter #3 starter Lew Burdette (18-8, 3.66), who is 4-0, 0.86 with three shutouts in his last five starts, and 'Sphinx' Mossi, who is 5-1, 2.98 in his last six starts.  Reigning MVP Granny Hamner leads the club with 15 RBIs in September, on pace for his second straight year of batting .350 with 200 hits and 100 RBIs.  Harry 'Suitcase' Simpson is turning on a late season power surge, slugging .844 with 5 HR in 11 games.
The Brooks lead Washington by four games with six to play, including a critical three-game head-to-head encouter at Griffith Stadium Thursday thru Saturday (9/25 to 9/27).

Colts Stampeding... Across Town
Team Officials Announce Surprise Move
By Lance Mueller
CHICAGO (Sept. 25) – Colts’ GM Lance Mueller sent shockwaves through Chicago’s north side today, revealing the team would be moving across town to Comiskey Park after the 1959 campaign. “We’ve been wrangling with the Wrigley contingence for over a year in an effort to establish a new long term lease,“ Mueller said in a recent press conference, “but we’ve been unable to come to terms that both sides found agreeable. Thus, we had to seek other arrangements.” Those “other arrangements” came in the form of Comiskey, which had fallen into city control and has sat dormant since the American League was dissolved in 1951. “We did not want to deprive the citizens of Chicago a chance to continue to enjoy their beloved Colts, and we were able to reach a deal with the city that allows us to move into Comiskey and keep the team in town.” The Colts will fork over a 10 million dollar “refurbishing” fee (which will be paid back over 5 years) to get the unused ballpark back into playing shape for the 1960 season. While Mueller admits the 10 million dollars the team spent on the Ted Wilks Stop now seems like a “waste”, he also stated that Comiskey’s nearly 16,000 additional seats and the playing field’s more spacious dimensions should help improve the Colts both financially and statistically. “We know many fans will not be pleased with the idea of having to travel to the south side of town to attend a Colts’ game,” Mueller acknowledged, “but everyone involved in the Colts organization truly believes this move will be nothing but good for the team and its fans.” Ultimately, that, like all things future, is still very much to be determined.
