Cha-Cha Reaches 3,000 Hits
Next Stop: Home Run Record WASHINGTON (May 8) -- Orlando Cepeda's assault on the record books reached another significant milestone tonight, when the 38-year-old Barons left-fielder collected his 3,000th UL hit, joining Mickey Mantle in the 3,000-hit club and moving closer to overtaking the legendary Superba as the greatest player in UL history. Cepeda is batting .275 this season, a bit below his .286 career average, but already has 42 and is on pace for 156, which would put him at 3,119 at season's end, just 213 behind Mantle's record of 3,332. The most imminent Mantle record set to be shattered is the career home run record. Mantle hit 634 in his 23-year UL career. Cha-Cha blasted 8 in 12 days Apr. 28 to May 10 to bring his season tally to 15 (second in the league) and his lifetime count to 622, only 12 behind the Commerce Comet. All this offense has only a marginal impact on the Barons' fortunes. The club is 22-20 and sits in fourth place in the East with the 8th best offense and only the 6th best pitching. Alan Foster has struggled in the #5 starter slot (2-3, 5.46) and 4/5th of the bullpen have ERAs over 3.80.
Surging Bas Win 11 of Last 13
BROOKLYN (May 16) -- The Superbas rallied from two runs behind to defeat the Cleveland Barons 3-2 tonight at at Frank Thomas Memorial Stadium and expanded their East Division lead to four games. Rick Wise (6-2) notched his sixth win of the year with a five-hit complete game and Greg Luzinski led the offense with four hits, including a home run and a double. Cleveland took an early lead on Cecil Cooper's solo homer in the first, his sixth of the year, and doubled the lead in the sixth when Rennie Stennett doubled with two outs and scored on Cooper's RBI single. Barons starter Jim Palmer (3-4) was solid, allowing just two hits through six innings, but served up a two-run homer to Luzinski in the seventh after Mike Schmidt reached on Chris Speier's error. With Palmer still on the mound in the ninth, John Stearns walked and Fred Lynn singled, but Schmidt grounded into a double play, reducing the threat with Luzinski coming up with one on and two out The Bull slapped a single into short left field to bring home Stearns with the winning run. Brooklyn is 10-7 in one-run games. Brooklyn pitchers have the league's best ERA (3.17) and the club ranks second in runs scored with an offense led by Luzinski (.401-12-36) and Fred Lynn (.302-8-30), and a league-high 29 stolen bases. |
