Putting on the Fritz
Peterson Leads Outlaws

LOS ANGELES (May 1)
- Los Angeles lefthander Fritz Peterson tore apart United League batters in April, holding them to a .228 batting average, posting a 1.41 earned run average, and winning five of his six starts.  The 32-year-old southpaw has redefined dominance in his ninth UL campaign, starting the season with 26 consecutive shutout innings in three straight shutout wins before finally allowing a run to Boston in the first inning on Apr. 18.  His run of five consecutive wins ended on Apr. 29 in a 3-1 extra-inning loss to Montréal, but even in defeat Peterson was dominant, holding the expansion Voyageurs to four hits and one run in nine innings before the bullpen faltered in the 13th.

The Outlaws lead the league far and away with a 2.24 team ERA, nearly a full run better than the second-best San Francisco Spiders.  Peterson has long been one of the best pitchers in the United League, but last season he wasn't even the best on his own staff, as Larry Dierker captured the Cy Young Award with a 18-11 record and 2.30 ERA, and this year he is arguably the second best southpaw, as Dave Roberts leads the circuit in ERA (1.04) and WHIP (0.81).  The stellar pitching has lifted the Outlaws to first place in the West with 20 wins in 28 games despite the second lowest batting average and third lowest slugging percentage.  The only hitter who has performed to expectations this year is Ken Henderson, who has a .931 OPS, 24 RBIs, and nine home runs, including three games in a row Apr. 27-29.

Russell Hits in 21 Straight
CHICAGO (Apr. 20) -- Bill Parsons and the Chicago bullpen ended Bill Russell's hitting streak at 21 games today, as the Atlanta shortstop was 0-for-5 at the plate in a 7-3 Toppers' win at Comiskey Park.  Russell hit in 18 consecutive games to start the season and hit in the last three games in 1973.  Russell hit .278 in 27 games in April, and became the first Hilltopper with a 20-game hitting streak since Ron Hunt in 1969.  Two batters had streaks of at least 20 games last year: Ken Henderson of Los Angeles and Elliott Maddux of Cleveland.

Performance of the Month: Fritz Peterson has three of the top 16 pitching performances this season, including a five-hit shutout of San Francisco Apr. 7.

Performance of the Month: J.R. Richard notched 10 K's and blanked the Spiders for a four-hitter in a 5-0 win Apr. 6.

Performance of the Month: Fergie Jenkins struck out 14 Texans in a two-hit complete game on Apr. 17.
Honorable Mention: Lynn McGlothlen tossed a two-hit shutout in Los Angeles on Apr. 8.

Performer of the Month: Rich Robertson posted a 0.92 ERA in his last 10 appearances.

Performance of the Month: Sal Bando homered twice and scored four runs in a 9-5 win at Dallas Apr. 16.

Performance of the Month: Bobby Grich drove in five runs with four hits, including a pair of homers, in a 11-10, 13-inning loss to Brooklyn Apr. 25.

Performance of the Month: Graig Nettles was 2-for-3 including a homer, and drove in two runs in a 11-2 rout of the Voyageurs Apr. 14.

Performance of the Month: Don Drysdale shut out Denver on four hits, striking out nine, on Apr. 22.

Performance of the Month: Dave Boswell had a 10.38 ERA in his first three starts, then allowed just one earned runs in his next two, including a four-hitter Apr. 23 against Montréal.

Performance of the Month: Bernie Allen drove in five runs and homered twice in a 11-2 rout of the 14ers on Apr. 27.

Performance of the Month: Dave Concepcion led all Texans with 38 hits and a .349 BA in April.

Performance of the Month: Ben Oglivie was 3-for-4 with a pair of homers and drove in all three runs in a 3-1 win at Chicago Apr. 25.

Performance of the Month: Duke Sims drove in seven runs in 14-3 rout at Montréal Apr. 5.
Fun Fact: 14ers are 4-0 vs. Montréal and 6-18 against all other opponents.

Performance of the Month: Bernie Carbo had 4 RBIs in a 5-2 home win over the Gray Sox Apr. 17.
