Opening Day Heroes
Ageless Antonelli Blanks Maroons

ST. LOUIS (April 1) -- Thirty-five year old southpaw Johnny Antonelli threw a three-hit shutout to defeat the St. Louis Maroons 4-0 in his Opening Day debut with his new club, the Los Angeles Outlaws.  The Outlaws are pinning their pennant hopes on a young rotation anchored by the veteran Antonelli, who had six 20-win seasons and set the UL record with 30 wins in 1961 during a decade-long stint with the Louisville Colonels.  Indeed, for 10 years "Johnny A" was the Louisville Colonels, winning Cy Young Awards in 1956, 1961, and 1962.  With the retirement of Billy Pierce last year, Antonelli inherits the mantle of the winningest active pitcher, with 256 wins coming into this season.
Other Opening Day heroes included Frank Thomas, who was 2-for-4 with an RBI in his Cleveland Barons debut, contributing to a 4-1 win over Manhattan.  Thomas, 35, drove in 429 runs in four seasons with Dallas, and ranks eighth all-time with 1,078 RBIs.
Catcher Ed Bailey was the hero in Atlanta, where the defending champion Colts won 8-6.  Bailey homered off newly acquired reliever Bill Fischer in the top of the eighth to break a 6-6 tie and give Chicago the first of seven straight wins (see article below).
The complete run-down of Opening Day '66:

Brooklyn 3, Boston 1
Lew Burdette threw a 7-hit complete game at the Frank and Ted Lepcio was 3-for-4 with two doubles, including a 2-run two-bagger that broke open a tie game in the seventh.

Detroit 6, Washington 5
Frank Howard and Charlie Lau hit RBI singles in the eighth as the Griffins rallied to beat Don Larsen and the Monuments in Washington.  Willie Mays had three hits and Ron Santo homered for the home team.

Cleveland 4, Manhattan 1
Frank Thomas was 2-for-4 with an RBI in his Barons debut, as Cy winner Johnny Podres beat his former club at Cleveland.

Chicago 8, Atlanta 6
The Hilltoppers built a 4-1 lead, chasing Tom Sturdivant after two innings, and racked up 15 hits, but still lost after the Colts rallied.  Ed Bailey's solo shot off Bill Fischer in the eighth was the game-winner. Killebrew was 4-for-5 with a homer for the hosts.

San Francisco 6, Dallas 5
Dallas rallied for three runs in the ninth to tie the game 5-5, but then blew in the game in the tenth when Jackie Brandt, playing out of position, biffed a groundball at second base, allowing Rocky Colavito to score.

Los Angeles 4, St. Louis 0
Johnny Antonelli hurled a three-hit shutout in St. Louis, beating Whitey Ford.  Frank Robinson homered in his first at-bat of the season, and Jimmie Hall hit a two-run homer in the second.

Chicago Starts 7-0
Colts Begin Title Defense With Two Sweeps

ST. LOUIS (April 8) -- It took eight games and a 4-RBI performance by slugger Roger Maris for the defending champion Chicago Colts to lose their first game.  Chicago notched three-game sweeps at Atlanta and against Los Angeles, and won here yesterday to build an early lead in the West Division.  Norm Cash, Bob Allison, and Ed Bailey homered in an 8-6 Opening Day win against the Hilltoppers>  Allison also provided heroics in Game 5, blasting a two-run homer to beat Los Angeles 7-5.  The Colts are 4-3 in their last seven games, and lead the West by three games over St. Louis and San Francisco.
