WASHINGTON MONUMENTS
CHAMPIONS

1952   1953   1954

Washington Three-Peats
Jansen Beats Zoldak in Clincher
WASHINGTON (Sept. 18) -- With seven games left in the season, Washington today clinched their third straight United League title.  Larry Jansen earned his 23rd win and Cass Michaels drove in three runs, as the Monuments beat St. Louis 7-5.  Washington came into Saturday's game with an eight-game lead with eight to play, and took a narrow lead in the season series (11-10) with three games at Sportsman's Park next weekend.  Saturday's clincher was Washington's 97th win of the year, tying last year's record.

Mays Powers Mons
Willie Mays won POW honors for the third time this season (fifth overall) with a .550 batting average (11-20), 2 HR, 6 RBI and .950 slugging percentage in five games.  Mays (.297-24-97) is having his best season, and September has been his best month of the season.  He is batting .429 (24-56) with 15 RBI and 15 runs in 14 games.  His .484 OBP and .750 SLG are monthly highs.  Mays was the United League's first ever draft pick in 1951 at the tender age of 18.  He was named the Monuments' franchise player and in four UL season has compiled a .273 batting average, 76 home runs, 315 RBI, and 126 stolen bases.

AROUND THE HORN

WASHINGTON
MONUMENTS
98-50   --
4-2

Willie Mays was 3-for-5 with 3 RBI vs. Chicago on Sept. 19.  Mays has establish a new UL record with 20 triples, and career highs in hits, home runs, RBIs, and stolen bases. . .  Carl Erskine was slammed for 7 hits and 6 runs in 0.2 innings in a 13-6 thrashing at Boston Sept. 14. . .  The "Big Three" have tallied 73 wins this year, compared to 69 last season.

ST. LOUIS
MAROONS
88-60   10   4-2

Won 4 straight Sept. 13-16, all by one run.  Ray Narleski (3.51, 7 SV) saved three of the four, and Paul Minner got a complete game win in his first start of the year. . .  Roy Campanella homered and drove in three runs Sept. 18 to reach 100 RBI for the first time in his UL career after 98, 94, and 99 his first three seasons. . .  36-year-old Ken Raffensberger is ending his St. Louis career on a high note.  He is 2-0, 1.42 in his last 3 starts, making his Reentry draft stock rise.

NEW YORK
GOTHAMS
81-67  17
4-2

Bubba Church tossed a 7-hit shutout on Sept. 18 against Boston, striking out nine.  After going 0-3 in his first 4 starts, he is 6-0, 2.25 in his last 9 starts. . .  Mike Fornieles has run out of steam in the second half (6-10, 5.16 in 18 starts), after a stellar first half (10-7, 2.72 in 19 starts). . .  Bob Hooper's 41 saves sets a new UL record.  He has converted 41/50 save opportunities (87%). . .

BROOKLYN
SUPERBAS
71-77   27
2-4

Gil Hodges' quest for the home run record has sputtered.  He leads the league with 39 dingers, two shy of Ralph Kiner's 1953 record, but has just 2 home runs in his last 18 games. . .  Richie Ashburn will be the league's highest paid player next year, after a five-year extension at $9M per year.  He celebrated by having his worst month of the season (.292 OBP, just one walk in 15 games).

CHICAGO
COLTS
69-79   29
2-4

Bobby Avila drove in four runs with three hits, including a home run and a double, against New York on Sept. 16.  Jim Finigan had four hits in the game, and the Colts won 14-5. . .  2-8 slump from Sept. 5-15 ruined chance to climb into fourth.  Biggest September slumpers: Lefty Chambers (1-3, 7.54), Mel Parnell (11.70 ERA in 2 starts), Al Rosen (2-26, .077, 1 RBI in 10 games).

BOSTON
BEACONS
66-82   30
2-4

Earl Torgeson singled in the first off Jim Wilson Sunday, extending his hitting streak to a club-record 22 games.  Torgeson is batting just .239 for the season, but is hitting .322 (28-87) during the streak.  He is just four games shy of the UL record, set by Roy Campanella. . .  Veteran thirty-somethings Vern Bickford, Bob Lemon, and Ed Lopat (combined salary: $11M) each got their first start of the season, with mixed results. Bickford was crushed twice (14 ER in 8.1 innings), Lemon was 1-0 despite allowing 23 hits in 2 starts, and Lopat beat Bobby Shantz and Brooklyn 7-5 on Sept. 15.

LOUISVILLE
COLONELS
60-88   38
3-3

Joe Collins, who was drafted by San Francisco in the expansion draft, drove in 5 runs with three hits against Detroit Sunday, snapping out of a 6-for-38 (.158) slump in his previous 11 games. . .  Closer Tom "Plowboy" Morgan has an infected lymph node, and will likely miss the final week of the season.  Morgan has 15 saves, but is having his worst season, with a 6-10 record, 7 blown saves, and 7.15 ERA.

DETROIT
SOUND
59-89   39
   3-3

Rightfielder Willard Marshall was the Sound's breakthrough player of the year, but was left unprotected and will be wearing orange and black by the Bay next year.  Marshall is hitting .268-17-87 as a full time right fielder.  Last year he had just 36 RBI in 80 games in a platoon role. . .  Another Spider-to-be is 2B Jerry Priddy, who has career highs in batting (.314), hits (161), RBIs (71), and OPS (.793). . .  Meanwhile Ted Gray (17-30, 4.89 in last 2 seasons) was protected.
