Jansen
Wins 20th
Washington
Widens Gap
BOSTON
(Aug. 15) -- The Washington Monuments went on a 13-1
tear to expand their lead to 12.5 games over second
place Detroit. Larry Jansen became the league's first
20-game winner with Thursday's five-hit shutout at
Boston. Jansen (20-5, 3.23), the Monuments' #2 starter,
has logged 13 complete games, including five shutouts,
in 29 starts. His rotation-mates Gromek, Koslo, and
Miller were 9-0 in 10 August starts. Sid Gordon, Sherm
Lollar, and Duke Snider each posted double-digit RBIs in
the first half of August, and Willie Mays batted .432
with 12 runs. With more than six weeks left in the
season, Washington has already sliced its magic number
to 23.

Busby Can't Lift Gothams
New
York Still Mired in Sixth Place
NEW
YORK (Aug. 12) -- New York Gothams OF Jim Busby won his
first POW award today. The right-fielder batted .588
with 7 RBIs, raising his average to .389 for the year.
Busby has hit .407 in 34 games since July 1. Despite his
prolific hitting and .442 OBP, Gothams manager Greg Bish
has Busby batting eighth. New York is the league's top
offense, averaging 5.7 runs per game. Ted Williams leads
the team with 20 home runs, 70 RBI, and a league-high 86
runs.
Brooklyn
Loses Hearn, Reiser
Just
as their best hitter Minnie Minoso (.340, .465 OBP)
returned to the lineup, the third place Brooklyn
Superbas lost fourth starter Jim Hearn (6-11, 5.59) and
center fielder Pete Reiser (.300-5-55) for the season.
Hearn, 30, who was the Superbas' 16th round pick in the
Initial Draft, has been a disappointment in Brooklyn,
posting a 15-26 record and 5.35 ERA in 49 games.
By contrast, the 32-year-old Reiser has
been a pleasant surprise for the BROs, batting .343 with
a .477 OBP in 105 at-bats a year ago and pounding out
106 hits for a .300 average in a starting role this
year. The St. Louis native's Aug. 10 strained posterior
cruciate ligament will bench him for six weeks,
essentially wiping out his season.

WASHINGTON
·
Only the young die good
The tidiest pitching staff around is making the
rest of the league look downright messy.
Only Dave Koslo is dragging the rest of the
rotation down with his stinky 3.58 ERA. Jay
Kaplan has taken the UL’s youngest team and
brought everything together in only their second
year of coexistence, taking an 8 game lead into
the final third of the season. On the
offensive side of things, the Junior Monuments are
doing just enough to support the league's best
pitching staff. If it's any consolation, JK
should only be able to keep this rotation together
for another 5-6 seasons, and may perennially have
to tolerate crappy draft picks.

DETROIT
· Every
motor needs good timing
A good bullpen is hard to build in this league,
but this one looks like one of the best.
They've combined for a 6-4 record, and
"Bearded" Clem Labine leads the league
in saves (24) while only losing one game.
Bob "The Stain" Cain, however, has
doubled last year's ERA but still remains lossless.
The starters are split with Porterfield and Rockin'
Robin Roberts getting better every day and Vic
Raschi heading south. Ted Gray Area has not
quite taken to his role as a starter.
Despite a league low offense and a below average
pitching staff, Kiner and company are still
hanging around the top of the standings.
Could it have something to do with the fact that
Manager McNeely tinkers with his squad less than
anyone else? A lot can be said for trusting
your boys. A 13-6 record in one-run games
helps, too.

BROOKLYN
· Reed
between the lines
The UL bids a fond goodbye to Frank Thomas as he
cleans out his desk. Thomas later admitted
that the "desk" in question was just
four milk crates and three 2x4's.
Regardless, replacement veteran manager Glen Reed
breathes new life into the Brooklyn Superbas, and
into the entire league, wasting no time shaking
things up and spurring a trade frenzy before the
ever non-loomimg deadline. The slimmed down
squad has shed over $5 million in payroll.
Saving for a rainy day, or does Reed have his eye
on a superbastar? Reed was welcomed with an
11-3 run in his inaugural sim, causing the league
to perk up their collective ears and take notice.
The shakeup doesn't look like it will affect
Hodges, Woodling and Hutchinson, as they continue
to post award-winning numbers.

ST.
LOUIS · Don't
Stan so close to me
Things haven't been so golden under this
(proposed) Arch. The defending champs have been
dodging the military draft so far, but their
injury bug light has lost it's zap. Key
injuries to Stan Musial, Zoldak, Kinder, Jethroe
and Campy this season have made it difficult to
compete, much less repeat. Manager TJ Smith
may need to look into some strengthening and
conditioning techniques in the off-season if his
boys are planning their return to championship
form.

BOSTON
· Mediocrity
reigns semi-supreme
The Beacons are looking for a way out of the .500
record doldrums. Self proclaimed pitching
and defense mogul Charlie Qualls shocked himself
by trading a draft pick, last year's ace Mike
Garcia and future star and personal favorite
Vinegar Bend Mizell for a homer-happy hot corner
warmer with a heavy glove hand. But the hope
is that the Mantle/Mathews/Zernial combo will
drive pitchers batty for the next few years.
“Ozark Ike” Zernial continues to perform as
one of the league's premiere power men, and Mantle
is improving every day as promised. Last
year's league worst defense has improved a bit,
and the Beacons are taking it in stride with their
“Earl Torgeson Bobble Hands Figurine”
giveaway.

NEW
YORK · "You
can take the Teddy out of the Ballgame..."
The Gothams list team leader Ted Williams as
another casualty of war, hoping that Frank Thomas
or Dick Sisler can fill his well-worn shoes next
season. The ageless Mr. Baseball goes off to
war proudly and promises to pick up where he left
off in '54. NY’s rotation looks good on
paper, but is still trying to get a toe hold on
the rubber. Jackie Robinson continues to
earn his paycheck in a league where good second
sackers are hard to come by.

CHICAGO
· Lance
takes it in the pants
Lance Mueller continues to get Colt-cocked by the
Korean conflict. His baby horses had to do
without the services of star infielder Bobby Avila
and relief ace Ted Wilks this season. Next
season, miracle man Bobby Thompson will be
slugging dingers in the Asian Leagues.
Luckily, outfielders are much easier to replace
than second basemen and closers. So what
else went wrong this year? One of 1951’s
more dependable rotations had a bit of a meltdown.
But this team is still quite young. And never bet
against any team that has a resident Yogi to help
keep things in perspective. Although when
asked about his team's chances of turning things
around this year, Berra was overheard saying
"It's not over 'til..., hey, who let that
chubby broad with the golden pipes in here?"

· Out
of the cellar, into the fireplace
"It don't get no better than this!" was
starting to ring a little too true for Mark Allen
as he sends future slugger Eddie Mathews packing
for pitching. But despite key additions of
proven veteran Mike Garcia and youngster Vinnie
Mizell, LOU's starting staff still looks like a
veritable "what's who?" with nine guys
vying for four spots. Jackie Jensen has
answered the team's call to power as he adds
"masher" to his ever-impressive list of
tools. Jensen has already matched his HR
total from last season while not missing a step in
AVG, RBI's and SB's.
